I am goimg to swap the 223/3 on the tree in my 58 ford custom 300 to a 302/aod this spring. Question is, is there a way to convert the stock manual trans column shifter to work with the auto trans? I have used the search, but the computer is smarter than i am! If not, i will be on the hunt fir an auto column. Thanks everybody! -LUKEY-
Here's a link to a post showing a method of converting a '51 F-1 truck column to work with an automatic, and how you can build in a positive engagement for park: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/815556-lfds-51-f1-suspension-build-2.html#post7145455 This is post #30 on pg. 2 of a long thread in case the link doesn't take you directly to the post. .
I made a detent plate for the 55 fairlane I just finished. I found some rods that worked(our trans guy thought we were going floorshifter so I had to fab some shit). Then I made a plate that fit in the factory auto shift rod u-bolt set up(our donor car was an auto). Then I shifted it though the gears and marked where the pin hit for every gear and park and drilled holes so it was a positive lock in every gear. I put an extra spring in the shift rod housing so it was more inclined to rest against the plate I drilled. I checked my computer, but all the pics are on the shop comp. Pm me if you would like em and I'll dig em up. It isn't a hard conversion, just time consuming.
