I found some old receipts in the glovebox for tires in my barn find merc, that was sitting from the 60's,It had 7.10's then. When I got my Merc it didn't.I put some old broadway 7.10 whitewall tires on it for rollers until I restore my car.I like the way 7.10's look on Merc's.

Lookin' good Lowmerc50!!!! The bigger tires definitely fill the area better.

What's up with the spikes on the wheel covers? Is that an old trick/ something that was done....or personal preference? I can't help but to think it's overboard with everything else that's going on with your car but don't get me wrong....I love your car!

Boy ,was this thread helpful.I am looking at a set of new 710/15 4.5 www firestones for my AYALA clone,at a good price, but needed info on size,appearence,etc..got it all on this thread.I have always used 670 FS tires, but those 710s look so much better, though not much of a difference in dia.,must be the whitewall.thanks to all for the great info.

WOW....great thread, chocked full o' info. question for you guys, my 40 buick had 6.50-16's stock size.....so I'm thinking about going with 6.50-16 firestones with 4" whites on front and 6.00-16's on the rear because I would like to get the back end lower and the skirts will cover 80% of the tires anyhoo. It doesn't seem like it would noticable. Alot of talk about 6.70 and 7.10. 6.70=28.58 tall--7.10=28.88 tall --6.00-16=27.91 tall--6.50-16=29.10 tall, so not much diff between 7.10-15 and 6.50-16 in height. what do ya think? crazy, stupid? let me have it!

Wow, that's a good old thread that bumped right up. Wheels, tires and how they sit in the wheel well is at
least 70% of a car's look. If you go wrong here, nothing can save you...;)

I'm running 7.10-15 Good Year Super Cushion
I think this man had the same... :D

When I first got it out, without the roof, I went for a bit earlier style.
This is Ford Script tires 6.00-16

so today I mounted a 57 merc rearend in my 49 merc, a couple of weeks ago I redrilled my front rotors to 5 on 5, now I can put early cadillac wheels [5.5 x 15 ] with sombreros on my car, and this thread helped me see the right whitewall at the end of the tunnel, so to speak.

  14. These 710's are the stock tires that came on these mercs,at least in 49 & 50.

  19. I was just wondering if 40mercs came with 6.70s or 7.10's from the factory?

  20. I would imagine. Must have a little more go when you press down on the gas pedal.:D

I asked this question a while ago, wish i found this thread then! I had 6.70 15's all round on my 40, but just couldn't get any decent lock on the front wheels, the tyres hit the fender alot front and back. I have had to drop down to 6.40 stones on the front, which have a bit less WW, which I was trying to avoid, and they still touch. How do you guys drive these cars, or are you all on air?
(pic is with the 6.70's, thats full lock!)

    Sorry for my stupid question:

Cant we use 7.60 on a 49-51 Mercury? We feel its a nice setup for really hard driving.

But maybe we have wrong ideas about these cars? We use 7.60 at the kustoms, as well as the "Dirt-Race" Mercury's...

    Oh, a Ford also...:

The 1940 Mercury came with 6.00-16 or 6.50-16 from the factory. :)

Lovely view of your great car, Jeff!

I have always thought that tire and hubcaps choice will MAKE or BREAK the whole car. For me if there is a bad ass custom and it got radial or doest have pie cutter design on the tires its a break. Hubcaps that are crazy done up. Its a break. Thats just how i look at things. Im a picky guy.

A while back I was big into this thread, I was picking tires at the time. Let me tell you, I AM A DYSLEXIC FUCKER. I thought my car had 6.70-15s. Truth is my car came with 7.60-15s....duh. I ended up going with the Coker H-78s w/3" Whites, WHY? you ask... because I'm cheap (almost $80 cheaper than 7.60s) and they are the direct replacement when they went to the -78 series tires.

Now that I can compare the 7.10s compared to the 7.60s I think my tires have too much black wall.
