Nice build, just found it. We did a total restoration on a 1927 Dodge Brothers business sedan last year for a customer.
I got the entire cab in primer today. I have been working like crazy finishing all the "small" stuff, like flush fitting the doors and evening the gaps. Mission accomplished. I find that spraying primer down helps to locate spots that need a little help(I hate finding them when I lay down colour!), so I have a few to take care of. With any luck, I will be spraying on Sunday!(I gotta replace the floor pan on a Beetle first...boo!) -Note- it looks shiny because it is still wet!
Nice prime job. With all the attention to the small things, I'm sure your final paint will come out great. Looking real good Graham.
Great work, looks better than I could have imagined. Your chassis choice should make it easy to put lots of miles on that thing
Once again I am slow to update! Finally got that Beetle floor done(never again!), so I could get back to the toy! I had a real cool pic of me spraying color on the cab, But I left the memory card on the desk, and the cat f****d off with it. If it turns up, I will insert it here. I had to finish welding the frame before assembling this pile-o-parts. You guys think you have a messy shop? Check this out!! It is kinda weird how a single vehicle can fill a 1000 sq ft shop huh? I started to panic a bit at this point, but it turned around real quick!
On the inside, I wanted some tunes, but diddn't want to mount it in the dash...I think that looks kinda cheezy. So, I built an overhead console to keep it out of the way. It also made mounting the wiper motors cleaner. The dash was trash. I diddn't want to re-build it, so I did the next best thing...I covered it with a piece of polished stainless. I also painted the wheel and coloumn to match. I still have to paint the cluster. Leaving some bullet holes was my wifes idea. I figured that since this truck will never be a "perfect" show vehicle, I agreed! The box looked a little bare, so a set of "haysides" were whipped up with a nod to our car club.
A freind gave me a set of mirrors from a motor bike, so, after some tweaking, I bolted them on. I guess you wanna know what this horror story looks like.... As you can see, there are no front fenders...yet. I am still trying to figure out how to build them. I guess that will be my project for the winter.
Damn thats looking fine!! I really like the color ,so you will be on the road in the spring I assume?
how are you thinning the rustoleum for spraying? reducer? what primer are you using? I know enough about painting to be dangerous but want to use it on a a boat trailer
I am using regular hardware store paint thinner, mixed until it's just right(about 4 parts paint to 1 part thinner.) The primer I used is also rustoleum ( or a knockoff of it). I applied it with a foam roller in 2 coats. I then sanded it with 400 grit D/A after a couple of days. Then one thin coat sprayed on. I diddn't use the roller for the paint, though. Sprayed 4 coats 24 hours apart. And yes...hope to drive it in the spring!
Nope, not laquer thinner. The stuff that you use to clean paint brushes that costs about 4 bucks a gallon!(and stinks bad!)
I just found this thread. I really like your work on the cab with the spare tire mount. The whole truck has the classy look of the bigger cars of the 20's. Nice work!
That's Crazy Man ! This is exactly what I had planned for my 29 Tudor before some scrappers got it !! Right down to the S-10 banger ! I was puttin' mine on a TCI 29 frame though.. Looks good !
Sorry I haven't checked in in a while, but I took a year off from building my truck to take care of other business and house issues. I will resume work in probably another month or so....and there will be lots of updates then. Thanks for keeping an interest!
Man, just read this whole thread. At the start I thought what a horrid piece of shit it was going to be. But you really blew me away! the way the cab came out and really fits the frame, the box is awesome too, and I really dig that green. Way to make a sharp looking rig and make a lot of us put our feet in our mouths!
