I was tinkering around in the garage and wondered what the Lyons' "White Walls" metal inserts would look like on the roadster that were currently hanging in the garage rafters. I know these were an accessory that were offered on the 40's Mopar cars. I am not sure if the Lyon brand was the accessory offered or not. They are for 16 inch wheels so I decided to see what they looked like on my 40 Ford wheels. I have to admit, I am not completely turned off by them, to me I could see me running them every once in a while. Seeing how much space there is between the 40 cap and the end of the insert makes me wonder if they would look more at home on a wide 5 wheel and cap. -Fryguy
Thanks for the opinion TV. Its probably one of those looks that could grow on you. It also has me wondering how the other Lyons insert that is chromed instead of white would look as well.
Actually a pretty cool, old timey, look. I like it. Some of the inserts went under the hubcap and some didn't. As long as yours stay on, I'd say it's OK.
Nothing wrong with a late 50's 283 engine. I was talking more to the Lyons wheels covers which you generically referred to as Spats.
I am a huge fan of 16" caps, I like these trims allot, but i think the white makes your wheel look 'fat', If it was me I would paint them the same colour as your rims........it will make the wheels look smoooooooooth........you dig!? On another thread I was trying to explain to someone that these would be prefect to adapt wide 5 caps to 40 type wheels, by welding/tacking the wide 5 caps to these trim rings. Would look killer I think.
I get what your layin down. The only thing with painting the rings the same color as my wheels, in this case black, it kind of loses the contrast effect. The wheels would be still be black. You are referring to making the wheel smooth out a little. I am on the wide 5 thought as well. There is just the right amount of space inside the trimring that it seems to lend itself to that wheel and cap combo
FYI: The name is Lyon, not Lyons, he was my great great uncle. He worked with Henry Ford and had over 60 patents in the automotive field. Spring bumpers, tire chains, Add on white walls........
I like em. I have a set on some wheels I bought, and they get all bent out of shape when I try to remove them. Hopefully you can get your's off without ruining them, or else you're stuck with them.
Rick, you are correct, it is Lyon. I was using the term Lyons as a plural form for the set of trim rings. I apologize for adding to the confusion. That must very cool to have him as your great unkle( ...or is uncle?) You must have some great stories to tell Fryguy
I think they really look great I can see them making a comeback in this age of uber cool no statement wheels. By the way I think your use on Lyons is correct in context as it refers to the possessive of the inventor Lyon and his intellectual property.
LOL, yep you're right. I did try to remove them off the front wheel and they are a big pain to get off. You can definitely bend them all out of shape taking them off. Its one of those things that takes 10 seconds to put on, but 5 minutes to take off.
I have a plastic set that came with my '51. I'll look for the other pics that have a stamp on the rear of them.
