    who can help me with the where-abouts :) ?
    the engine is a LG 4, 1986 ( caprice )
    the big pole (top) is connected to the battery, +
    R gets a + when I turn the key to "start"
    S is conneted to the mass
    I know the bolts are a little stumpy, this is a set-up of "the previous ", I put a brandnew one in the car;
    The electricity works, I measured and I get 12V at the poles;
    all help appreciated to wire it "right", thanks,
    M

    Connect S to the Solenoid terminal on the igntion switch. Leave the R terminal disconnected. I assume you are using the original 1986 HEI distributor? they do not need the resistor bypass, because they don't use a ballast resistor.

    It's a Remy-Delco distributor which looked fairly new when I bought the engine,
    2/ when I measure from S to the housing, it seems like S is interally connected to the mass ;

    If you want the starter to turn, you need to apply 12v to the S terminal. That's how they work.

    Jim, you can buy them books and send them to school but some of them will only eat the covers off the books.

    Model B 32 you are an fng so you don't really know but when it comes to questions on Chevrolets and Jim aka Squirrel gives an answer 99.9999999999999 percent of the time that is the only answer you need as it is the right one and unlike some characters on here he never jacks anyone around no matter how dumb the question is.

  6. The resistance you are reading is the solenoid coil. Jim's exactly right, just hook the wire from the "start" position of the ignition switch to that S terminal. Everything else is as you drew it. You just drew the ign. switch wire to the wrong post.

    R term is ONLY used with breaker point type ignition.

  7. If Squirrel or Bruce Lancaster answer your questions just do as they say.

    I used the search function, and found a thread with several diagrams, with coils and resistors, solenoids and regulators: I have none of them; I have an engine with a distributor, an alternator and a starter, thats all, hence the question;
    I didn't have the intention to doubt about Squirrel's advice; so I connected S to + and I got a 3" spark, hence the answer about the regulator.
    With Exwestracer's addition, I now see why I got a spark.
    SBC parts nor specialists are laying around here; if you say Chevrolet, the think Daewoo ...
    I order my parts in the US, but for advice ... I also have to cross the ocean.

    If I stepped on toes, I'm sorry.
    Thanks for answering my question.

    Does the starter work when you apply 12v to the S terminal?

    I've started many engines by shorting the S terminal to the + terminal with a screwdriver, but I think the biggest sparks I've seen are only about half an inch. Using a switch works better, and it is not as exciting.

    If you got the information you need, I'm happy

    also if you put your location as something more than specific than "planet earth" then others might see that you are from another country, and that you might have a language barrier, and be a little easier on you :)

    Yep Squirrel,
    two wires; one 60 mm² to the battery,
    S to the starter.
    .. with a very small heart because the engine hasn't run since 1997;
    the starter works, the engine turns over; on to the next step now.

    thank you for your appreciated help,
    M
