In 1970, my best friend in high school, Eddie Stephens, taught me how to drive a stick in his '69 Z28. How cool was that! I was grinning from ear-to-ear while learning to driving that car.

After a couple of lessons in his car, I thought I new everything there was to driving a stick, so they set me up by asking me to drive the wrecker into the garage bay at the service station I was pumping gas at, at closing time. I didn't know about 1st gear being the granny gear in a wrecker, so when I put it in 1st gear and took off, that wrecker was bunny hopping up and down all the way across the lot until I got it parked inside. Everyone was rolling with laughter when I exited the wrecker.

Oh to be young and dumb again!

1973 Chevy Vega GT I bought new. The salesman gave me a quick lesson, I drove around the lot a couple of times, then got out on US 98, one of the busiest roads in Lakeland, FL, and drove home.

When i was about 7 or so, I used to play around in my dad's 1950-ish international pickup. He would sit next to me & tell me how to use the cluth and shift gears.

Then one day when I waswashing our 1976 Subaru Station wqgon (4x4), he sterted it up and told me to drive. It took a few tries but before i knew it, I was driving that thing all over our ranch. Mom said she looked out the window and saw my dad riding shotgun in a car with nobody driving!

1949 Thames 1/4 ton when I was 14, and I still have the same Thames today, 48 years later. Currently runs a 383 strocker with a 700R4 and 3800 stall converter and Halibrand quick change.

Funny. Mine was a '79 Datsun 310 around '84 or '85. My pops put a million miles on the car, then I started driving it in the mid/late '80's. All things considered it was an awesome car, I couldn't kill the little anemic bastard, plus it got 30 mpg.

  20. 'First car I ever drove was a '57 Plymouth Savoy w/flat 6 and 3 on the tree. Now I have a '46 Plymouth Special Deluxe Business Coupe w/hopped up flat 6 and 3 on the tree. Other car is a '39 Plymouth Business Coupe w/hopped up flat 6 and e on the floor. I guess i haven't come that far in 50 years......

  23. 1984 Dodge Colt 4 door hatchback. AKA The Gutless Wonder. My mom hired some druck crack head to put a new engine in it for her. The POS never made it over 60mph. I did how ever take it to a flea market and charge people $5 for two swing with a sledge hammer. I ended up making about $800 bucks off that thing!
