yeah he is.....he is not in the best health anymore and just does it from his home I believe. I am looking into one of these machines myself.
i have to look threw my attic some time. a uncle of mine managed a tire shop back in the day and gave me a tire buffer new in the box. i did not know what the hell it was for so i hope i just put it in the attic. i am thinking it is for this porpose. hope i still have it ! can start making my own ww tires.
We had a fellow with a tire store here back in the 70s who had some sort of machine like that. I had him widen some whites on a 67 Ford convertible. It was done with tires on the car. The store has been closed for quite a few years now. I called him a while back to see if he still had that machine, which he said he doesn't.....but he may still have some of the grinding wheels. Need to get back to him to see. If he does, he might either give or sell them to me....but then what will I be able to do if I get them? Just need to see, I guess.
Cool - Curious - how far out from the wheel lip are those starting? About 1/2"...? Those tires are easy to get, too. Are they 215, 225/75r15s you have?
Approx 1/2" is correct , most finish @ 2" wide safely with out getting to the uneven edge of the inlay. You can push the envelope & try & go wider but you run the risk as all tyres are not the same , re placement of the inlay !!!
Bajito's in Alb. NM still grinds tires using that method. Classic Cars of NM in Alb. buffs tires dismounted. Both do great work.
Not really, Play with an old junk whitewall tire and a sanding disk a bit and you will see that there is a thin layer of black rubber laid over a fairly wide whitewall to get the desire narrow white wall. you just have to take the black back off evenly. There used to be a guy in the Waco, Tx area that made the rounds of the car lots putting white walls on tires on cars or making the white walls on a car match. On the car service and he could do it pretty fast. I'm lucky, my wife will walk a block before parallel parks any vehicle she drives as she hates parallel parking.
