Bought a 1962 Fairlane 500 2 door, originally a 221/3 speed. Looking to drop in a 302 and either a 4 or 5 speed manual transmission. Looking for suggestions on which transmission would be the best fit. I hear that a T5 is too long and will put the shifter in the middle of the bench seat.
I am running a 170 six with a cobra spec t-5. The shifter is tight but i can shift no problem. Made my own handle and the seat is half way back can't go any further foward. Overdrive is great. I got 27 mpg on the last road trip with 3:50 gears.
Find an M5R2 5 spd out of a 90's something F150. Good Gear ratio's (0.75 OD), and normally cheaper than the T5's. The shifter is also further forward on the top of the trans, just like older 4 spds. I put one in my '51 F-1 behind the 351W and the shifter location was almost the same as the stock 4 spd. The one down fall is the M5R2 trans is a bit bigger and may require a little massaging of the floor or cross members. Good Luck
Pull the tailhousing off a GM S10/S15 Blazer T5 and bolt it onto the car T5 to move the shifter forward.
I use to have 62 Fairlane and I changed original motor and tranny out for a 302 with c4.it was a good setup for that car.I was very pleased
