I've seen a few pieces of this work before but never knew who was responsible for it. Thanks for clearing up that mystery! But hey, the guy's last name starts off with "Artzy..." so I'd say this was probably his destiny!
Incredible! How far is that stuff from Roth's stuff? They both cut pretty hard, but Roth used to not claim to be an artist. For all that, his T-shirt designs had a hell of an impact.
I've had his art stuck in my head all day now, only discovered him this morning! Something really gripping about his work. It's more than art, I don't know....
This is great. I've seen this guys work many times in the past, but never got past the signature and never knew his first name was Boris. Awesome. I wanted to name our first child Boris....got vetoed. BTW, anyone want to take a stab at the pronunciation? Which syllable has the emphasis?
Deep. The man was an Advisor for the Phycological Warfare Dept. Also over 200(!) TIME magazine covers. Look up who ran Time.
If I was a guessing man, (and I am!) I'd say it was pronounced "BORE-us". Oh wait, you probably meant his last name. In that case I'd go with "art-ZEE-buh-chef".
I became aware of Boris' realistic illustration from Time covers of the '50s, and I think I saw his anthropomorphic stuff in Popular Science or one of those titles around the same time. He also did some illustration in Ford's "Ford at Fifty" anniversary commemorative book. I have a 1954 copy of "As I See". I don't think anybody has surpassed him at adding human features to machines. It's an unexpected pleasure to discover that several of my HAMB pals -- Ryan, Scooter, Marcie, and Jeem -- are also fans of his work.
Damn, you go off for a few days and look what shows up. Boris was a brilliant illustrator. His surrealistic stuff has often overshadowed the fact that he was a great portraitist and did a number of Time magazine covers in the 40s-60s. If you are really interested, Syracuse University has a large number of them in their collection as he or his wife left them to the school. In person, they are even greater than the images here. Good reason to leave the Syracuse Nats and go explore the city a bit.
awesome. i was wondering just a few days ago if there's ever been a thread on Artzybasheff on the Journal. he also did some ads for Shell motor oil back in the 50's. great stuff.
