Mayberry Days

Thought I'd dredge this up. Drove some folks around today for the Annual Mayberry Days Parade in Mt. Airy, NC. This pic is Eleanor Donahue in my uncle's 42 vert last year (me at the wheel). This year I drove around Margaret Kerry (Disney's model for Tinkerbell) in a 60 Met. Will try to get some pics up later tonight. Aunt Bee was rolling in HAMB friendly duece highboy--hope my wife got some pics of that.

I heard Aunt Bee and Andy didn't get along to well off camera..

I always thought Goober had it made, single, living above the garage, lot's of good friends and working on all those nice cars..

I always thought Floyd was a cool dude. Educated, slightly odd, well groomed and eloquent. But hands down Barney was the best.

She WAS the older sister on "Father Knows Best", just a year or two BEFORE Mayberry, which dates from 1960 on. Ellie was in the very early Mayberry episodes. DD

id love to come to one of your mayberry days. i left tn. to try to go home. i hadnt been back to chicago in 15 yrs. this time. when i left i was 17. when i tried to go back i was in my early 30s.i noticed i started watching every mayberry show i could. i missed the south SO bad.i went on vacation and headed to alabama.i was lookin for a mayberry style town.small clean friendly.i found my mayberry.in n. alabama. been here almost 25 yrs.now.mayberry is a state of mind. not just a tv town.

how about the town "drunk " w/ the 34 roadster ? was he there ? WHAT EVER HAPPENED TO THAT CAR ? i heard somewhere once it is out there in a collection? my boss { "rube cornwell " R.i.p. }back years ago had a roadster like it in parts -he always said it was the car after a drunken drive home by that guy and he bought it from barney fife ? mike "carryallman" wahl

Kind of OT but Andy Griffith is a very loyal man. He kept Floyd on the show after his stroke. Changed scenes so he could sit. He also had almost all of the major actors from Mayberry on Matlock at one time or another.

Car collector too.

The guy who played Floyd the Barber was Howard McNear. McNear actually had a stroke and did not plan to return to the show. Andy Griffith convinced McNear to return. The stroke made it impossible to stand for very long and his left arm was of little use to him. A special chair was designed for McNear to use on the show. That is why in later years Floyd is not as mobile as he was earlier on. Eventually his health prevented him from returning to the show and he died shortly after that. Floyd was always on of my favorites on the show.

I read somewhere that Aunt Bee (Francis Bavier,...reportedly not well liked by anyone), died alone in possession of an old car that she'd driven for 35 years or so. An old Buick or something,....at least she had a respect for old cars.

BTW Oldcarfart. moved to the real mayberry two years ago from your neck of the woods (Greenwood). it'll be hard to beat the real thing IMP. to hot in sc for this mountain boy

good news is wife downloaded the pics--bad news is she didn't take any of the deuce. will have to find the hard copy my buddy gave me from last year and see if I can get it scanned. same deuce, same "aunt bea."

here's pics of Margaret Kerry (aka Tinkerbell) in my uncle's Nash metro. this car actually started life as a hardtop and was built with a "parade deck" where the back seat was specifically for this parade. super nice lady. used to drive a met herself (also a 65 mustang convertible) still has a falcon ranchero her family talks about restoring.

second pic is Elizabeth McRae aka Lou Anne Poovie in the 42 vert. Intersting side note, I learned last year while driving her around that Elinor Donahue drove a similar car until her first awards show when her manager told her she needed a better car to arrive in. If I recall, I think hers was a 46 vert--and it was an automatic!

James Best is also a regular at this event, but he ride in the white caddy convertible ala Boss Hog sorry no pics of that either.
