Projects Why is it that there arn't very many cars that are painted in all metal flake?

I'm a riddle wrapped in an enigma... You were gettin' warm before, but now your gettin' colder again...

 

If you like it, do it! Don't let anyone else dictate your taste. I think, from having done them back when I painted cars, the reason it isn't done more is the cost, not that expesive material wise, but a TON of labor! If you do your own work, cost isn't so bad!

I painted a few cars and vans in the late 60s and the 70s in flake.I am painting our 37 chrysler in flake this is the dash I just done.

Flake is a personal choice, don't let others opinions get in the way of what you want, unless they're positive of course.
I wanted a flaked roof on our Plymouth and our friend Mike laid on some gold holographic over cream base...yeah, everyone said 'Don't flake over a light colour" ........well it turned out awesome and with todays modern two pack paints and flakes you dont have to lay it on like back in the day, and...they don't chip and crack nearly so readily either. The flake we used was not the biggest flake though...from memory it was 0.08 mm...and it did not need gallons of clear to take the orange peel out.I wish I'd done the whole car.

But I'm so much more than that. Ooops, more glib humour again...Actually every once in a rare while, this forum still has threads on truly traditional hot rods. THATS why I still hang around here. Clear things up for you? Probably not...

 

Lots of cars are painted metallic, just not in boat size flake.

Jack Rudy's Chevy in my opinion is one of the nicest flaked cars. The subtle use of the painted black body lines really compliments the car and its form

 

I could see something like this in flake.
And I know, I have posted this photo before, but the car is a knockout. Honestly, I am surprised my personal taste has caused such a fuss. I didnt realize my opinion commanded so much respect. Oops! Damn! More glib, satirical humour. Maybe I need to join some kind of support group...

 

Everything got toned down in the restoration, but the original Junior Conway applied marigold metalflake on this Lee Wells over-the-top 60's built '56 Continental gets my vote for the best ever. (Sorry, I couldn't find a better pic.)
I have read that Junior's later paint jobs (on high end restorations) could run into six figures!

I don't see much there that could be classed as a traditional Rod or Kustom. Have you built or Are you currently working on something so traditional that it will show the rest of us how it should be done? Because I am honestly here to learn from people that have been there and done it, and if you fall into that category then you can say what ever the hell you like as far as I'm concerned and you'll get no argument from me. If you don't, well that's a different story. My "traditionally inspired" ride is on this thread for everyone to see and pass opinion on. How about yours?

Old flake paint job usually crack b/c of the heavy clear coats
Newer paint materials allow for flake paint jobs to be painted with less risk of cracking
NO chance at matching
Expensive

Dig this French built Consul Capri

 

Tony Coe's Capri from around 1977 painted by Ian Rawlinson, lost to a fire years ago.

 

Rod and Custom magazine followed along a painter who showed the process with todays paint systems. About 2 ys ago or so.

 

Sure it's a personal preference. For me, I dig it. EXK paint work which will be at the Long Beach Motorama 2011

 

Like the size and density of the flames 'flake. This shade of blue is rich looking.

 

^^Looks to be about the same size as the flake on the cad I saw on the weekend. It wasnt that noticable unless you looked at it in direct sunlight.

 

I agree, it was one beautiful car. I loved everything about it, except that front license plate.

 

Sounds like you mean my 5-window.
It was painted with big Roth silver Flake and red candy on top.
The coupe looks the same today but it has an early 331 Caddy now.
