Do you have any info to share on the last few photos you posted?

Here's Billy Shuman in the #84 and Steve Waugh #22 (at the rear) during our WRA /WCVR event at Havasu City AZ last year.

Certainly looks like an Edmunds/Moser.. Great sounding motors when they were right.

Nokie Fornoro had great success with a Konig in the ATQMRA in 1976 winning 5 features. I think there were at least three cars running them at one time through the 80's with the last one running as late as 1992.

I'm looking for some chevy II info. I plan on running a 153 cu block with the 8 port mercruiser head that was off a 181 cu. Anybody remember any tricks to doing this? The 8 port head has bigger combustion chambers I am worried it would lower the compression ratio to much. I have heard that 283 and 307 pistons work to make up for this? I have a 153 head that I can also just put on and be done with it. Any suggestions?

    Thanks

Actually, BZ, for what you are going to do with your car and the places you will be running it, you will not exceed the performance of the standard head. All of the standard Eggers & Vetting Chevy II stuff will fit and you won't have to run around looking for parts and needlessly spending more money.
When I raced midgets in the 60s, I had a 161 Chevy II engine with a standard head that ran quite well. There were guys running stroker cranks up to, I believe , around 180 c.i. but the heavy cranks wouldn't wind up very fast off the corners. I recall a couple of cars that had V8 heads fitted to Chevy II blocks but I don't recall exactly what was involved in doing that. Of course, then came the SESCO.
Unless you are totally obsessed with the boat head, you are better off with the standard head. I can assure you it will be plenty fast enough.
Are you running gas or alky???

For those who may be interested in sprint car racing in the 20s and 30s, here's a link to some photos Bill Barringer recently shared with me of his dad's (George Barringer) early racing career on the dirt tracks of Texas, OK, Ark., MO and the mid West before moving on to AAA Championship Racing and a stint with Harry Miller and the Gulf Millers.
Friday was the 65th anniversary of his fatal accident (along with Indy 500 winner George Robson) at the Lakewood (Atlanta, Georgia) 1 mile dirt oval.

Mac I think your right. A stock 153 with a decent cam and all the EVM bolt on goodies will more than do it for what I need. I think I will go this route.

    Thanks

  28. Many times I see people putting in way more engine than they need in an old race car for track time. And many times I see that decision become a nightmare. I think you're smart to use the stock route like you're saying.

...and the tall guy in the dark shirt standing next to the track? I think it's Don Blair, who won the CRA championship in '74 (?, might have the date wrong)...I got that same stare when I briefly drove for Don, until both of realized that I drove better straight than around corners...
