I took the car to the Eagle Field Drags yesterday for its first trip down the strip.....

I was too busy to get any pics, but my buddy mike got a couple clips....one is the Birds first run, and second, is the unfortunate crank snout breaking last run.

Took it real easy off the start, but then had some fun with it. Very little traction at all....I need more weight in back. The Hemi next to me was a good match until I got too excited and bounced it off the rev limiter forgetting to shift into 3rd. The announcer called it a "lean misfire" hahaha. Good times. The crank snout broke in the second video....overtightend pulley tensioner by a crew member. BUMMER.

Sorry to hear about the crank snout breaking.
An idea for the future that *might* improve
crank snout durability and *might* be do-able
with a small bit of tig-welding and some machine
    work. You're running a Nicson marine-type
cast aluminum front cover right? I'm wondering
....what about making a homemade roller or ball
bearing crankshaft snout support - by tig-welding
a short length of heavy wall (- ie - .250 wall or
greater) aluminum pipe to the backside of the
front cover and centered on the crank hole - and
then machining the inside of the pipe to take a
roller or ball bearing and snap ring to retain it?
'Back in the day', Mickey Thompson, among
others, produced roller or ball bearing-equipped
'crank support' timing covers for blown fuel hemi
applications, but as far as I know, nobody ever
made them for Buicks. Maybe though, it would
be possible and practical to duplicate the idea.

Great weekend of terrorizing the drag strip!

The car did really well, went down the track awesome and really handled the punishment well. Alot to be happy about.

Let's rap on the phone this week and i'll let you know what I can find out.

Yes! Lets chat this up. I wanna make some wheels up passes! It was cool hanging out with you guys, and the help was also much appreciated.

I know the car blew up, but the way I look at it is......I have dreamed of having a gasser since I was a little kid, and now I have built, and raced my own. That, in itself is RAD.

  10. Great stuff! Awesome pics and video. That's what it's all about - you'll dial it in better with every pass. Killer car man. Killer.

I was actually thinking this was a good idea before it happened, but now I am definitely going to do this.

Wow, I need to clean my drawers after listening to that. And I mean that in a good way.

  14. After seeing that video of the bird in Vegas, I think adding "driving a gasser down the Vegas Strip" to my bucket list is in order.

  17. Very cool car!! I heard it run in Vegas it sounded like a top fueler! ......question..... how does it stop with rear brakes only?... I thought about doing that a couple of times but always chickened out

It's OK for drag strip use, but I would never do rear brakes only on a street car. Panic stops are just like pulling the e-brake at speed. SKETCHY.

Hey Chuckles, I was hoping to see the Strange Bird at the NorCal Knockout. Is it still down with a broken engine?

Unfortunately, yes. I should have it put back together before next years eagle field event. I'll bring it to a few events in the meantime, but it will just be a static display. This motor is not going to be cheap to redo.....so gotta save my pennies!

This Car Is Bad-Ass! I would love to see it coming out of the water box with both rear tires ignited, and spewing out a huge rooster tail of white smoke! That is this machine's natural environment!

    --------------------------------
I dig the idea of a stick and a stock bell from
a 4-speed Riviera has gotta' be a pretty cool
and rare piece....but you really *NEED* a
    scattershield!

One other idea - they're getting pretty scarce
these days, but have you thought about using
    a 'Clutch-Turbo' or a 'Clutch-Flyte' tranny??
You'd still only have three forward gears, but
because of the clutch, you could launch at any
rpm you wanted and there'd be no converter or
stall speed issues to worry about. And because
of the constantly engaged and meshed planetary
gear-sets - as opposed to conventional sliding
gears and synchros used in a regular manual
trans - parts breakage in high-hp applications
is much reduced compared to regular manual
transmissions and it's also virtually impossible
to blow a shift too. Plus, shifts can be done at
full throttle (or at any speed) without ever using
the clutch - (other than to initially launch the car
off the line) - just by moving the shift lever.
