just had to tell the world,my tallented BF cut my 4 door Merc off her frame yesterday! Shes in the air gettin cleaned up and rust treated..etc,then shes getting lowered on my 84 Buick thats all ready....finally,were getting somewhere! Look out Alberta, here we come!
I am lacking the tools to be anywhere close to as cool as you are! Bad ass work! Keep the pics coming as you make headway.
well a set back....in the old shop we rented there was a drunk who operated a loader,he uses it to move our cars etc....our rust free rockers were badly dented from the forks...we figured it was fixable...but they are not...now we have to find replacements, and the new ones are square contour not rounded!such garbage! now my rear quarters need to come off as well to do the rockers....so theres a few week set back!not a happy girl....
If they aren't welded on the bottom panels of the quarter panels come off in about an hours's worth of work and they way you have it setting now I'd say that you could have them both off in about 30 minutes. Can you cut the spot welds out, pull the rockers off and straighten them and put them back on? Just a thought.
Sorry to hear about your setback, but if it was easy, everybody would be driving these fine rolling pieces of art. It's what makes us special. Keep at it, and the reward will be that much sweeter. P.S. a twin tower? I'm jealous.
I'm interested in seeing more pictures of how you lifted the body off the frame. Did you just use 4X4's slide through the windows? Did you add other bracing?
lots of bracing inside! so theres no flexing etc...he didnt want the 4x6 wood touching the windows etc...its boxed in real nice and cross braced etc....
My friend had his made by Dennis at GT Metals in Edmonton. He had to take templates of the curves and they came out really well. He too had repro ones that didn't fit. Uploaded with ImageShack.us
That makes the job look all too easy We did it with a chain host in front and a cherry picker in the back using the two rear holes that go through the trunk but I sure like your method a lot better. I borrowed the earlier photo to show a guy who had his truck sitting on a two post hoist how he could lift the cab off by himself.
HI Mercgirl IT is totaly necessary to brace the body on a body off the frame, IS it not? Can you send me pictures of bracing and a description of how it was done. THANKS Jim DL6
yes it is necessary to brace the car...we modified our bracing so the wood would not touch the car at all but rest on the bracing..we didnt want the car to twist at all when removed from its frame.(trust me bracing not done right will bite you in the butt later ie,door that dont close right etc)....it work great!as for pics of our bracing...ill dig around and see what we have for pics DL6
