My buddy put a 4L60E trans in his rod and it's hooked up to an early carbureted 305 and the motor doesn't have any sensors to operate the computer for the trans. He's checked around a few places and the price is ridiculous for the controler and wiring. Any one have any suggestions on how to get it working?

You pretty much must have the controller. Call TCI and ask about a full manual valve body kit. That might be an option, but I'm thinkking not. If it is, just realize that a full manual valve body is a harsh, hard shifting, race piece. It isn't pleasant on the street and evenif you enjoy driving it at first, you'll grow tired of it in a few days.

Pick up a factory PCM from the vehicle year & type the trans came from.

The motor he's got doesn't have any way to install sensors to operate the PCM.

I guess You can either figure out a stock throttle position and vacuum sensor etc. Or swap in a old 700r4. Or spend some coin.

    Good luck.

edit: probably cheaper/ easier to get a tbi harness from a 88-98 truck or 4.3 s10 and put the whole system in.

You could use a controller and harness out of a diesel 6.5 box truck.. you only need to rig up a tps and I think a tack signal power and ground...but i could be wrong and I don't now about the shift points could be way off...

  8. call torrance transmission at 310-378-9217.
one of the guys there produces what is probably the best controller set up for that trans. its not cheap at all, but it works.

If he's interested in a TBI, I happen to have a complete TBI, sensors, engine harness, PCM, whatever he wants, that I'd consider selling, currently on a 350/4L60E I originally bought for my Diamond T truck. Honestly though, it'd be easier and cheaper just to get a 700R...

  10. Common mistake, He needs to find an early 4L60 trans...it will be cheaper in the long run.....

As has been said...700R4 is the best route. TV cable and no trans controller.

  12. I think the only cheap way to do it is if you have a you pick yard handy and a 1993-1994 Chevy Suburban or van with a 6.2/6.5 diesel turns up with the 4L60E trans. They have a standalone PCM that only runs the transmission. With care you should be able to remove it and install it on your car.

The problem with using one from a big box truck is anything over 3/4 ton is going to have a 4L80E trans instead.

"Plug the JET Power Shift into your automatic transmission wiring harness and you can choose from four different shift firmness settings--Stock, Stage I (for around town driving), Stage II (with a more aggressive feel), and Race."

uhhh....the problem is he doesn't have the harness to plug it into! or any of the other parts that connect to the harness, such as the computer

Just get a 700R4. No real tangible benefit to a 4L60E, especially in this application. Get a used one, a book and a rebuild kit. Do it yourself. Then you can do it for others, for money.

The only time that I will resort to an electronically shifted transmission is when a 4L80E or a 6L80E is called for, for a high horsepower and torque application.
