I made mine from 3 peices,,an unknown oil bath type, an '84 schoolbus and other metal I formed. I aged it,rubbed through the paint and scratched the emblem in different colors of aerosol paint. I still have some pinstriping to do and make a horsepower rating somewhere on it,decal or pinstripe.
I don't know if it will help you on yours, but i made the ones for my SU's out of aircraft tailwheel hub halves, I made a tool to cut the grooving in the sides, then i had to machine out the flat part of the hub, and make a round plate that screws on for each one. I'm using universal oil bath green foam filter material, with a heavy piece of perforated stainless to hold it,then the original wheel hub circlip ring holds the mesh in place. The first variation was made with stainless steel soup bowls, with mr gasket air cleaner parts welded on then leaded in place. My buddy called em purple arabian titty holders. Sadly they didn't clear everything. Ill post a picture of them later, they might be adaptable to a setup like yours. Or at least an idea to make one like it.
Made my own out of 20ga sheet metal and JB WELD.Punched them with my small press.Anybody can buy Air cleaners but real rodders sometimes make their own. !!!!! LOL. TOM (TIRED OLD MAN)
Wanted something simular to the old Greer Black Prudhume scoop on their old F/E dragster.. but nothing out there,, so I had to make my own. not quite finished yet,, Butttttttttttttt !!!!!!
so this is my "tongue in cheek" aircleaner on my 49 Plymouth. I tried a bunch of old and new ones, hated the look of them all including the old reliable cadillac air cleaner. While perusing "that auction site" one day, I spied one of these with flames on it. I told my son about using it as an aircleaner and he asked me if I was on crack. I went out and bought one at Bed bath and beyond, had it flamed at a friends bodyshop, affixed an old chrome 4 barrel base on the bottom, found a filter that fit the hole, drilled and slipped on the top and Voila, an aircleaner made out of a toilet seat! It fits my sense of humor well and most people can't figure out what the heck it is. traditional? probably not, but you all use one..........
5 years too slow! I like posts like these, air cleaners are one of those thing that show the creativity of people. Unlike me, I'm boring and unimaginative and just have this off the shelf cast alloy pair. Please excuse the crusty engine bay.
I've been giving some thought to the old black-japanned cylindrical type: It's occurred to me that one can hide a liquid-to-air intercooler in there if one is doing a clandestine turbo set-up ...
Nothing special. The first one is on my sedan and the second is going on my 54 after it's polished and striped.
Some real beauties on this thread. This is one on the low-buck end of the spectrum that I made for my scratch built roadster. The intake holes are all drilled on the bottom side of the toolbox and then the box was stuffed with furnace filter material cut to fit the shape of the box. The Pepsi can serves as the hold down nut.
What is the name for the filters with the v8 logo punched in them? They are cool as hell. Is there a more specific name than v8 air filter?
