  1. 69 VW Bug, got my license around the first of October, and being in upstate N.Y. snow was right around the corner, so VW it was.

Ah, I just had a flash back...1960, I was twelve..A 14 year old buddy had a 48' Crosley Panel Truck that he drove around his parents property..His dad's relaxation was out there futzing around on his Ford 8n [and I will swear that tractor had a Funk 6cyl conversion] and "we" drove all around him for hours; my friend was behind the wheel with his left arm out the window and his right hand on the steering wheel and handled the clutch, gas, braking while I was shot gun with my right arm out the window, shifting the 3 on the floor with my left hand...The more we drove around his old man the more puzzled he got, was even better when he was bullshitting with a neighbor and the neighbor commented that his son was a pretty good driver.....We had gotten pretty good as a driving duo but he finally figured it out; gave him a good laugh.......I'd pay some money to re-do them couple hours.....

It was either a '68 or early '70s Chevy pick up, straight 6 with three-on-the-tree. It was my dad's truck from his store. I never did stupid stuff with it, but it did make for a challenging time on a date once or twice. (We were able to meet the challenge, too.)

  13. My father's 1961 Buick special wagon, 3 on the tree, in 1962, one week before I was to take my driver's test I was 16 yrs old. BTW, I past the 1st time.

  14. I learned in a 1965 Ford Falcon window van. It had. 240" six & 3 on the tree, with a 4.56 rear. Not only did I have to learn to drive stick, but I had to learn that I had to turn just a little later than you would in a normal car since you're actually sitting just ahead of the front wheels.
After getting smacked in the back of the head a few times for curbing the back wheel on right turns, I learned pretty quickly. Thanks Dad!

My first stickshift car was my FIRST car - a '62 MG Midget . I taught myself how to drive it after I bought it & got it running . Never looked back since . Almost all of my cars have been stickshift , and I've had quite a few . I taught my wife to drive stick on my '68 ElCamino SS , then bought her first car for her - an 83 Ford Escort ... a stickshift . She's hoping my Shoebox will be a stickshift when it's road-worthy - she can't wait to do some gear-jammin' !

A buddy drove me 40 miles out of town so I could buy a 71 Datsun 510 with a 4 speed for 50 bucks when I was 16. I had to figure out how to drive it home.

An old 1948 Grumman bread truck. Learned to drive it when I was 9 yrs old. Back in 56' when the Teamsters union was on strike, my father would pick rags, metal, paper for scrap to feed 5 kids and a wife. He used to pic mostly at the town dump back when it was allowed. He always brought me with him and taught me to drive the truck in case the sides ever collapsed and he got trapped in the hole, I could drive out and find someone to help....:)

  21. In 1962 when I was a senior in high school my dad bought two vehicles, a 59' Studebaker pickup with three on the tree and a 59' Morris Minor convertible with a four speed. Between the two I learned to drive a standard pretty well. Drove the Morris to school a couple times and had to put up with my "friends" hiding it on me and then picking the back end up off the ground when I tried to leave!

Learned to drive on the Lamborgini tractor when I was old enough to push down the clutch, probably 9 or so.

Learned to drive in a very off-topic car when I was 18 (didn't grow up in the US) and it was a stick.

First time I drove an automatic was a Mercedes 500, had to ask someone to explain the concept to me, I had never been in or even seen an automatic till then.

To this day I don't like driving an automatic, manual is where it's at.

I started on an International tractor, and a little on the 76 F250 my grandfather ran around his farm. My first car was also the first stick I drove regularly . . . it was a classy 83 Renault Alliance. Talk about blazing power! ;)

'65 Toyota Stout PU. Three spd on the column in a field. The first ever was sitting on my Dad's lap in a '64 Studebaker Lark. He would step on the clutch and I would shift. Miss him.

  28. My grandmothers 1956 Ford Zephyr 6cyl 3 in the tree. She gave it too me in 1982 when I was 14. I did burn outs beside my parents house until the clutch went then sold in later that year for $125. I regret never taking a picture of it. 29 years later at a local swap meet I see an older guy walking around that looks familiar, he is the guy I sold the car too. I asked if he still had it, he said he didn't for sure, he had many of them over the years but still had 5 or 6 on his property. He invited me to come over and have a look so I did and there it was! He attempted to make a convertible out of years ago then lost interest and started parting it out. He allowed me to take some souvenirs off it. At least I have a few pictures now.

  30. 1963 Mercedes Benz 190 Sedan. Four speed on the column. I could just make it into fourth gear in my parents driveway before having to slam on the brakes before hitting the garage. Ahhh sixteen....
