how many have won awards/trophy's at shows for something different than you built?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by skull, Aug 1, 2011.

  1. A few years ago I belonged to a car club that put on one big show every spring. When we were planning the event my suggestion (serious) was to charge $20.00 for all those who wanted a trophy and $10.00 for those who just wanted to show ther car and not get pissed off at the awards ceremony. Then the ones who wanted a trophy could pick what they wanted the trophy for (1st place, best in class, best engine, best paint etc. etc.) that way everyone would be happy.
They didn't go for it and there was a bunch of pissed off trophy hunters again that year!
I won a "Most Popular Car" trophy last year over about 100 other cars because the public picked it and not the judges. I displayed my car with a bunch of period stuff including a trailered period correct raceboat. I did hear someone (pissed off trophy hunter) say "I bet there are several cars next year towing boats) :D.

  2. I won a "stock" car award once. The car has a factory paint job and seat covers, but bucket seats, body mods, and floor shifter are not original.

I'm getting "you can keep your $10 trophy" painted on the back of my ol school 26 T. I was once kicked out of a show for not contributing to their trophy fund. I stated I was here to look at cars and give others a chance to look at mine, their reply was if I wasn't entered into a class to get out! I normally look for car cruises and steer away from car shows. Later

I could do that, but they'd laugh behind my back "He thought he'd get an award?!".

A few years ago, I went to an outdoor bike show, and was asked if I wanted to enter my panhead with sidecar in their show. I said no, I'm not really a show type person, and parked in the parking lot. At the awards, they called my name and announced "this goes to a guy who isn't a show guy, but we thought it should have an award anyway." This felt better than any show I have entered!

The next time you get one of those $5 trophys, hand it to some kid you don't know as you are walking away from the trophy table. They love it and (it would just get tossed in the trash at my house).

I had some old girlfriends like that!!!!

Back when I had my 40 coupe, I went to our little local show. Now it was period correct for being a hot rod. A flat head with two deuces, wide whites, with Merc hub caps, with the beauty rings, and a nice red paint job.

At the gate, I was motioned to the stock parking, which I did. Then there some some old fart, even older than me, with his Model A, all original (Almost) and he climbed all over me for parking in the original section. After a loud and heated argument, about that's where they told me to park, and his jumping me, for mine not being original, parking the the section for original cars..

However.....:D:D:D:D.. I see a alternator on his Model A instead of an original generator. So I tell him to park over in the modifieds too. Talk about shutting him up.:D:D:D.

Later on I saw he had put up a hand written sign on his windshield "Original, except for alternator".

So the moral of the story, if there's going to be any judging I'll either park in the visitors parking lot, or park with a sign, do not judge.

I agree though, the hell with entering some car show for $25 or more to get a $2.50 plastic trophy.

Now those that say, "those who enter the car show, get a free lunch with a soda", that's a different breed of cat.

Everybody wants to win. If you enter your car you want it judged with it's peers to be the best example there. All of this "..I don't go because..." sounds like false bravado to me. If I enter a client's car or help a friend with theirs, you bet your ass I'm there to win. Why not? It's a form of competition, isn't it? Forget about the dumbass judges and non-car people. Pick your shows right and go for it. Or don't. But here's the thing. You establish a winning show record for yourself or your clients, you're done. EVERYTHING now has to be that good. And I mean even your own stuff. If you work on it or restore/rod it, it better be as good as you do for your people. The only escape from that is a stone cold original that you leave that way. At that point you're off the hook...but only a little bit!

I drove over to Pleasanton last Autumn for their get together. I just wanted to get out and cruise, check out some high dollar rides, and get some In N Out on the way home. I came back and it had been judged or assigned an award. I was happy to be recognized, even if it wasn't the most technical award. I had parked way in the back field and was just trying to find an easy way out when I left early.

I was happy to be recognized. I think it may be a little insulting to get have someone call your car a rat rod but boo hoo cry me a river. Try driving an Edsel, everyone thinks they know something about history and wants to call it names. I could give a shit, I'd still rather drive this than the Accord or Camry they pulled up in to call mine a failure.

My point is take the prize, laugh about it later with your buddies. Or be a crybaby and post about it on one of the biggest hot rod forums online.

not cryin' at all. in fact, now that l have thought about it, l think it's actually cool to be reconized.

mr. Drugasm, please read the post on the build l have about the truck l won the award with, l did this truck to help me heal and just go have fun with it.
the show l took it to is one of the best shows we go to.

thanks for posting :Dl appreaciate everyone's opinion.

AND, the next one l am building will probally be called a r@t rod every where l'll go. it's a 30 dodge 4 door to 2 door by cutting 7" out of the rear doors and welding up the rear windows to make a fake sedan delivery type rod. my friend used this body to learn to weld on and it looks like it. no, l did not cut up a nice car, some one else already hacked off the rear doors and sliced up the roof so, l figured l can't hurt it by doing this to it. saved it from the crusher.

the chassis is a TCl style custom built, that way on top it looks like crap but, underneath all new components.

    Later:cool:

Seems to me that much of this giving cars awards for something the cars are not -rat rods- for example just goes to show how clueless so many people are about hot rodding, and cars in general.
They have joined The Hamb, got a subscription to one of those fashion magazines posing as a car mag, get the right clothes, and drive their Prius to the car show. They have joined the fad and that is about where is stops. I'll bet the majority have never owned a car with a carburetor.

A friend asked me to bring my truck to a show he helps sponsor a couple of weeks ago (I hate park-and-sit events), so I put "display only-not in competition" on the registration and left the window card off. Enough people wrote a description of the truck on their ballots (public vote) that they gave me an award anyway. which really suprised me and a few others as well.

As a trophy shop owner I could care less about winning an award. Sometimes I make it clear not to judge my stuff, hell they're rough drivers anyway. That being said, if I win an award I take it, smile and go on.

Now all you guys going on about $5 trophies, can you email me and let me know where these extremely cheap awards come from. I could have an easier life buying those and resaleing them. Then I do, cutting column, engraving plates, assembling the pieces into an award and all the other work that goes into them.

Won best roadster which I could understand, touring being an open car. Took second best "hot rod" to a '55 Chevy post. It was a nice car and besides, my car was on the front page of the local paper, not his. lol

All I have ever won is "Best Unfinished". I assume it's because my cars don't wear shiney paint. It is what it is.
