I have a 350 with a tall water pump. The alternator and powersteering pumps both use the water pump for mounting. On my 283 there is a short pump and there are no brackets going to the water pump.

Is there a short water pump that I can use and still retain all of my bracketry?

The reason I ask is because I am working with very little space between the water pump and rad. I need a better, larger fan for cooling.

    Thanks

I may be wrong but I think if you use a shorty then you have to use diff pulleys and bracketry.

May be some trick stuff out there though

thats what i figured. Can't win. I guess Im gonna go dig through my SBC parts pile now. You gain a decent amount of room by swapping the pumps.

You gain close to an inch.

  6. I beleive 70's era Corvettes use a short water pump that accept the later style brackets. Not 100% sure tho...

Vettes all used the short pump, for decades.

Trucks used the short pump thru 72.

Other chevy cars used the short pump thru 68.

The alternator switched sides when they changed to the long pump, and the belt for it moved to the front of the stack, it was at the back with the short pump.

What is the story on the 3rd pump that I had on my GMC pickup.
Is it considered a long or short?
I know I got stuck on the side of the I80 for a day waiting for the parts store to find me one.

Depends on the year of the truck.

The trucks using 'sbc' engine used the standard short pump, just like Chevy. If your truck had one of the "GMC" only engines (V-6), long waits.
