Event Coverage BUNKER HILL DRAGS "battle at the hill"

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by dirtbag54, Jun 16, 2011.

  1. posting up for the "BATTLE AT THE HILL" drag and show event. This is our second year renting out the second oldest drag strip in the country. EVERYONE is invited, bring your car, truck. This is a VERY laid back show/drag event, last year we had everything from a completely stock model T, to tex coopers blown and injected on alcohol 55 chevy going down the track. We do not care how fast or how slow your custom hot rod is,just come out and have FUN. Race, show or just hang out and watch. $5 a person to watch $20 for a car and driver,to make as many passes as you want. 11:00-? if you do not want to race but show your car $5 a person.

puke can, seatbelt, and helmet required to race.

Holy Shit!!! I didnt know it still existed. Was stationed at Bunker Hill AFB 1960-1963. We ran a 36 Ford and a 54 Ford a few times there, knew some local girls. Drank lots of beer at the Dirty Floor I think it was. Good times for sure. I guess its Grissom now.

Grissom is there but I believe it's out of comission, although there are a lot of people still working there...still a party, the place hasn't changed much.

A little history on Bunker Hill. Opening the last weekend of August, 1956, It is probably the first 'purpose built' dragstrip in Indiana. (Of course, abondoned airstrips - such as Stout Field on Indy's west side - had been in use for 'acceleration trials' for a couple years prior.) I have heard others say it was the first east of the Mississippi, but I am not sure about that. It was initially opened and operated by Mr. Jim Hollinger. In speaking with Mr. Hollinger a couple years ago, there were I believe 37 cars present that first weekend.

While I do not know if my late Grandfather raced that first weekend, I know he was there the second weekend as I still have the the trophy that he won the first weekend of September of 1956.

Just a little heads up for anyone on the fence about coming to the Hill. I made 25 passes with my sedan, my wife made two. Rick the guy with the burgundy T-bucket made over 40 passes. Where else can you go and have that much fun for $20.

There has been an update on the entry 20 bucks run or show we figure if your going to show it you might as well run it too The tech in will be really easy seat belts, catch can,and a helmet for you roadster guys (like that would help) The whole idea is everyone stages at some point during the event not necessary but you will miss out if you dont and if 20 bucks is too much you can spectate for 5 bucks cheap cheap cheap really fun time dont miss it
