1974 Chevy Beauville full size van 3 on the tree. The next one was a 1975 Ford shortbed pickup that belonged to my grandparents. We rebuilt it last winter into a rusty hot rod and did the long haul on the 2011 Hot Rod Power Tour

1953..36 Chevy. Glad I wasn't chewing gum cuz all the shifting,signaling and steering really maxed me out! That night I told an old race buddy, Hank Arnold that driving a race car had to be easier, all he had to do was steer!

 

1959 Nash Metropolitan, 3 on the tree! Was 12 at the time. Asked Dad for a go-cart to drive around the side yard, got the Met. Basically the same

 

My '62 bug that I got as payment for doing yardwork for one of my dad's buddies...when I was 11!!!

 

'49 Hudson Commodore 6 in 1962. I still have the gearshift knob.

 

My first car, 1968 Plymouth Baracuda / 318 and 3 on the tree.

 

Driver's ed. The owner of the car had a '66 or '67 Impala or Biscayne with a 3 on the tree... But I actualy learned with a '72 Ford pickup with a 360 and a 3 on the tree.. Fun times man!!
Now that's all I drive is manual trans cars... Well, except for the ol' lady's ride..

Me too...on my cousin's farm in Iowa, '46 Ford pickup 6-cylinder, 4-speed, no syncro rings, had to double,clutch...once you got the hang of it it was easy, then he taught me the 3-on-the-tree in his 53 ford, thought that was harder than the pickup...

 

my first vehicle a 76 datsun p/u . 16 yrs old and my dad drove me to pick it up. 25 miles from home and i'm sitting behind the wheel and dad asked " you know what to do ? " me : " uh......kinda" dad: " you'll figure it out......see you at home"

1965 Corvair. My dad taught me on service road that ran beside the interstate. Stalled out on my first try, then as luck would have it, the battery was was too weak to start it up, so we had to push start it to continue the lesson. So I guess I learned to drive and push start a manual in the same day.

1949 Dodge wayfarer first car, almost cheating as it had fluid drive.

1st on the road, a 50 Dodge 1 ton with a 2 speed rear end, had to split shift it with a load of grain.

 

Greensburg,Ky 1961 My dad worked for an oil drilling company that had leased property scattered out in the countryside I would drive him thru these farms ,he would get out and open the gates must have been a early 50's Jeep pickup....flathead 4,3 on the floor....I was 9

 

My Mom's '40 chev coupe. When I turned 16 she gave it to me for my high school driver.

 

Late '30's Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck... or a John Deere M series tractor, don't remember which was first.

 

1966 Ford Bronco- 289 3 on the tree. I was 10 and my grandpa asked my how tall i was, then said we were going out to the deer camp. The half assed road had a VERY steep section going up a mountain. My grampa stopped in the middle, got out and said I looked like I could reach the peddles, then said he would meet me at the top and started walking. It took a good 5 min to get up that section of road and I am sure I took a 100,000 miles off that poor engine and clutch, not to mention that I rolled all the way to the bottom of the hill before i figured out how to dump the clutch right without stalling it. The lessons went better after that, and I have only owned 3 automatics out of the 30+ cars i've owned.

Make that "attempted to" in my Grandma's "46 Stylemaster 2dr which I eventually inherited but ultimately sold, ...the attempt might have been more a success if perhaps my Dad rather than dear old Granny had been on hand to adequately explain the equipment & technique. I was about 13yrs old at the time and had kinda wheedled her into it...
