Building a gasser with a 540 BBC and a 6-71 roots blower. Looking for inspirational photos of those 6-71s, 8-71s and even 14-71s sitting on top of those high HP motors. Lets see your favorite pics! I am especially looking for the blacked out industrial looking blowers - Anyone have photos?

I was over the age of 10 when the movie was made, so it never did anything for me, but the "switch" did confuse a generation of kids who now can't understand how blowers really work. The styling of the scoop is indeed wild, one of those Aussie things.

The blower with 3 carbs is a 14-71, I think. Not quite the same as a 6-71.

Correct. It is a standard helix made for nitro cars a while ago. Now it is on gas with carbs.

Note that a 14-71 is actually pretty cheap, since it is difficult to fit on a street car, and is obsolete for real race cars.

Note that you can't use a normal distributor, and to remove the distributor you need to remove the blower.

Also, these are almost all strip type blowers, and they won't work with gas on the street, so I took mine apart and took out the black strips on the tips... A real race car builder would probably puke if you did that, but this blower was made for 40-50 PSI, and I only need about 15 on gas with 9.0 CR and a big roller cam.

The intake is not normal for a 14-71, it is actually a marine intake for an old B&M 420 on a tall deck. I made an adapter plate so I could put the 14-71 on my tall deck 496. A little extra work, but I only paid $99 for the intake and $20 for the plate. It uses a stock height distributor and has a thermostat, but it didn't have a back fire valve, so I made my own.

Three AFB 750's is not the normal setup for making power, normally is is just a bling deal, but...

    1. I have a good friend who got screwed by Holley on the first generation of bolt on EFI they sold, it simply didn't work, but they blamed him for all the problems. (He is an engineer who has been building engines in his spare time since he was in his early teens...) Therefore, using Dominators was out, along with all other Holley carbs.
    2. A pair of 1150 dominators would cost ? At least $600 for two of them, compared to my AFB's at $75, $100, and $80 (the middle one is an electric choke and cost more) They are more than double the cost (probably more like 4-5 times the cost)
    3. Most people think that it is a joke, and the front & rear carbs don't actually do anything...

This is what it looked like at the beginning. Note that the typical mechanical injection hat opening isn't long enough for the third AFB, below it is completely blocked off by the top of the housing casting... Probably why most people think it is just for show.

So, What to do? I only paid $1100 for the complete blower, $99 + $20 for the intake... Oh well, it's only money, if it didn't work I was only out about $1500 including carbs, blower and intake, so what the hell.

    No turning back after this:

Milling out the top of the case for three quads using an adapter plate, note that it won't work with holley's placed inline since they are longer due to float bowls.

Also note that to clear the cowl on my coupe, I had to push the front carb forward as far as possible, requiring a ball mill operation at the front of the blower inlet... probably doesn't help fuel distribution, but who cares, the fuel is going through a blender about 2 inches later, and is getting heated up to 200+ degrees along the way, so as far as I can tell it doesn't really matter.

Bonsey - Love the 4-71 on the coupe. Elegant execution!

Twinturbo - Never would have imagined it until you showed me. Love the inovation. How does it run? Its a lot of fuel and a lot of blower going on there. Can you show some more photos of the distributor clearance?

Regarding performance 87 octane, timing locked at 30 degrees.

These are rwhp & rwtq numbers, certainly not the highest numbers for a 496 BBC, but few if any can beat my 87 octane numbers after driving 20 miles to the dyno, running, then driving home.

Here is my 5-7 psi (15% underdriven) pull with 3.50 rear gears and an automatic trans.

    Distributor clearance.

Because I run a fairly big solid roller cam and low static compression ratio, I can easily run 30 degree timing locked. Anyone with a smaller cam and or higher static compression ratio will probably benefit from a newer programmable box.

My car won't ping, ever, even lugging the motor down with a locked converter at 2000 rpm.
