Early Hemi Intake Questions

Trying to figure out what kind of 2 barrel carb would have fit on this intake. It's a wide pattern 4 bolt carb.

Also what was the risor coming out of the intake at the top of the pic originally used for.

turns out it's stock Carters from a 331...and the raised area is the heat riser platform for the choke

What about the olds carbs that looked like side drafts but that was just because of their top design?

I believe that intake is for a Dodge Hemi,either 241, 270 (low) or the 315, 325 (high), not sure if high deck or low?? The old Dodge carbs had a wide base..That is a very unique intake..

It bolts right up on my Chrysler Hemi....tried it on a 331 and a 392 and works for either. Everything lines up right where it should. Going to use it on my 392 thats going in my 32. I have a set of old finned Edmunds valve covers that match. The carbs were the last missing piece to the puzzle.

I was thinking of machining adapters to use 4 bolt rochesters on this..but I might just hunt down some original old carters that would have gone on this. It's a pretty neat intake..haven't seen too many others like it around.

 

Going from memory, 1951~1954 Chrysler Carter WCD's will fit; nothing else will.

Yup, takes the OEM 51-3 2 bl carbs, You can block off the openings in the heads & use the housing in the intake or block that off or use the 392 crossover. These intakes do come up now & then. Has the small 51-3 ports.

One problem . That's a "wet" style intake,
made for the '51 through '53- style 331's.
The later (non-hd-truck) 331 and 354's -
and all 392's used "dry" intakes. It wont
work on a 392 unless you also use the early
'51-through '53 style 331 heads designed
for a wet intake.

Not at all true. Just being a wet intake means nothing, unless you use the water pump with the thermostat housing cast on it. The real issue is the port size is much smaller on this intake then the '54 to 58 port. If you try using this intake on a 392 with '54 on back heads, you woll have to use adapters to make up for the deck hight differance.

 

That intake is for the 51-early 54 331. Here is a pic of mine which has been drilled and tapped to take 97s. The center deck was added by ? in the 50s. If your don't work out for your application I would be interested in buying it .

 

The 392 has the seperate W/P, like I said earlier he could block off the front of the heads & use the thermostat in the intake, or make a ther. block off plate & use the 392 crossover. You wouldn't want to run the 51-3 heads on a 392, hmmm, I guess if you were going to run the small port intake you could put big valves in the heads & have high flow rate through the small ports. Probably better to just run the intake with 392 heads & mismatch on the ports.

 

Just need the 54 heads to run the early wet intake and big valves like the 55 triple nickel heads just no front water boss.

As was already stated, if you put low deck heads on a tall block then you will also need the spacers.
The would be no advantage in doing this other than the lack of end ports. Use the intake on 392 heads, block off the end ports and live with the port mis-match.

FWIW, the venturi bore and spacing is the same as the 70's Carter/Holley 2-bbl used on the 360/400 Mopar. Not exactly traditional looking but two of them should be adequate for a mild 392.

Heres mine, its going on a 54 311, 10:1 pistons and 392 valves.

It looks like the same intake I put on my '54 331. I used a stock '52 and a '54 Carter WCD. They were hard to find but easy to rebuild with a kit. Works great, don't know CFM of these carbs, or if they're enough for a 392.

 

does anyone make a carb adapter to put a stromberg on this 4 bolt pattern? Hot Heads maybe?

 

Not sure about that but I personally don't think two Strombergs are enough carb for a 392 Chrysler (approx 300 cfm total). I'm running four with straight linkage on my 392. I'm assuming you are speaking of 2 bbl 97's here though.

I wouldn't cut up an expensive intake, but you can probably make a 4X2 plenum box to bolt onto the intake.

Matt at Lakeheaders.com has these slick Y adapters to run two 97's on each port. I'm going to fab up the lower mounting adapters I was asking about and bolt them on. I've got 4 old chrome strombergs which would look killer on it

 

I've seen them for use on a 4 bl intake, thought they looked a little hokey myself.

 

Here's the intake for my 291 Desoto. I'm going to make some adapters myself to run a pair of 97's.
