Im picking up a barn fresh 52 on saturday, The thing is the tires wont hold air and the wheels are not matching. I was hoping someone could tell me a good tire and wheel size combo. also I cant seem to find a listing of the offset. I was looking to do a 16 inch i think unless someone has a lead on a good website to buy original style wheels. I am open to any suggestions and help with this. THANKS ALL!!!
You can put most any 15" 6 lug wheel on there, as long as it's not too wide and doesn't have much offset. beware the rivets on the front hubs might keep the wheel from seating flat if you use newer wheels, I usually just grind off the rivet heads.
you will need a tall tire to make the gearing correct for highway use. I found a very good looking wheel through my tire supplier. It is sold as a trailer wheel. it is a 16x6 six lug wheel with four nubs to accept a hubcap. I was able to get them finished in black. They also found me a very nice tire. 215/85/16 radial. It has an odd tread design that makes it appear somewhat vintage correct. It is made by Radar. I bought the entire setup and had them mounted/balanced with new steel stems. $720. really made a 1950 Chevy truck look and act correct.
Looks like a pretty solid old truck, and you don't see the GMC version as often as the Chevy version.
I suppose the fact that my truck was a four speed helped. Those tires are 32" tall. I actually used granny gear to start out and was pleased to discover the truck would run 70mph without screaming bloody murder
I used these on my ford panel http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/tire-selector/size/LTMetric/215/85/16/OE/BNW/commercial-t-a-all-season/tire-details same size.
I know of the perfect tire for you. It is a Dunlap A/T Radial Rover. The size I used on my 1967 chevy C30 dually is 215 85/R16. These tires have the look of a vintage tire and I actually get comments about them. Check them out. You won't be disappointed
Pickin it up tomorrow, thanks for the help guys! Gettin it pretty cheap, there were also 3 1953 chevy trucks in this barn too!
