You are right. It looks to much plumbing style.
Drill a smal thread in the column. Machine a part with an external thread that goes in the column and drill an other thread (parallel to the column) in the machined part. Cut off the ugly hose clamp and drill a hole in the base braket of the turnsignalswitch. The hole in the switch needs a 45° fase. If you use a bolt with 45° head it will center the bolt and with correct dimension it will put the switch close to the column.
I hope you get my idea.
    Cheers Dany

Maybe use one of those clamps with a butterfly style tightening handle. Butch/56sedandelivery.

Perhaps incorporate the big end of an old aluminum connecting rod?

Hard to describe but bend two sheet metal strips that hook into the slots on the body, wraps almost 1/2 way around the mast with a 90 degree foot and a hole for a machine screw pinch bolt between the two. After you bend the feet, round them off on a bench grinder using the hole as the center of the arc. It can be a challenge to hold all 3 pieces, start the pinch bolt through the two holes and then catch the nut but it looks original and is very clean. Most of the originals had these straps but they got lost along the way. If you make it too fancy you lose the charm of the old piece and that's why you like it right?

  11. i have seen versions of these where the tightening screw is hidden in the housing... only the band shows
look at the way yours could work like that
    remove band
tighten the with the band in place note excess of the clamp tail.... remove any none esssential tail....
slip opened clamp thru one side of unit..around and thru other side

drill 1 hole for the screw replace screw with allen head for ease of use

use a quality stainless hose clamp if the original will not modify
or a modern wire clamp may look older

over simplifiing but basicly using what you have only better

use the same clamp to mount tach!

    good luck

How 'bout mounting the clamp under the dash with just the lever showing? Might even be able to activate it with your knee. Pedal steel guitar style.

A leather wrap might be OK too if you are into that look.
