I put one in for a customer recently (OT '69 Z/28). The Z still had the M21 and original 12 bolt with 4.11s, and felt decent with the motor that was in it (not the original 302), but when the customer built a "correct" 302 he asked me about making more power without being too obvious (no huge cam, stock Z/28 heads and intake, etc). So, we built a 383 stroker, and he's been very pleased with it!

I also had one in an OT '97 Camaro SS (LT1), and it had 4.10 gearing with the 6 speed. 2300 RPM at 85mph, and pulled like a freight train all the way to redline.

Frankly, I wouldn't build a 350 (or large journal 327) anymore...unless you are spinning the 350 to the moon, and have the valvetrain to support it. The 383 is going to make more power, and for about the same price.

Why not just leave that crank in the 400 block, and take advantage of the 20+ cubic inches with the 4.125 bore?

Is it because the 400 stuff is getting hard to find? Just wondering?

try to find a good 400 block. they are scarce and when you find one they are typically twice to quadrupal the cost of a 350 block.....

  8. So what cubes does a .060 over 350 block with the 400 crank make? My block wa at .040 but had to go to 60 over to clean it up.

I've got one in my '33 Ford coupe, fairly modified. Dyno'd out at 517 hp, running T5 with 4.11 rear gears, runs low 12's with street tires, doesn't idle worth a shit, but it's worth it!

I finally got the motor in the 63 chevy truck and got the cam broke in. I pulled it out of the shop and around the block to turn it around and I tapped the gas once and the truck felt like it wanted to pull the front tires off the ground. Here is a quick vid of it. I need to figure out what is causing the noise at :08...think the pulley on the water pump needs one shim removed.

Correct. That's what I was running in my o/t '72 Vega. That engine was stout to say the least.

Yep, 383 going in my 46 Olds, lots of torque for a big heavy car at 3.5k lbs. Add some ported alloy heads, roller cam and lifters along with a 6x2. Should be fun when dialed in on the dyno. Add a fresh 700R with 2.5K stall convertor and 3.5:1 rear end. :D

Let's price out a homebrew, if you would? Include labor and machine shop work. Target hp/tq is 425/450 respectively----same as the zz383 crate. Feel free to change any of my suggestions because i'm not an engine person, just trying to get zz383 numbers cheaper if possible.

    Summit remanufactured 383 block $650:
    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SUM-150100/

i know you can't just drop in the rotating assembly without checking things out and if nessesary do machine work, but it appears that the most of the major machine work has been done.

    Scat rotating assy # 1-47010---$1600:
    http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SCA-1-41710/

This kit has forged crank--same as the zz383. i don't know which is better I beam or H beam rods, but the zz383 appears to have H, so i went with that.

Not sure where to take it from here. i want aluminum heads because the zz383 has them. i am not 100% opposed to iron heads but they better be very cheap.

Also, if it makes a difference in component selection, i plan on running a tunnel ram because i have the hood clearance.

Yeah? and hows that fuel economy?

BBC are great for big HP/TQ with a small investment, but most I've seen suck up any savings in terms of how much gas they drink quite quickly.

Outside of a drag racing environment, I'd never touch a BBC for anything.

    For my '38 Chevy truck Im building a 500hp (ish) 383, with a TKO600

Yep, we all like a bit of torque. Fully rebuilt with an old look. Fired up 1st time, straight out rams, sounded frigg'n great. Few minor adjustments, rockers etc, and water pump decided to shit itself. Dry for too long ah..

Got one in my 69 truck ... it fills the cab with tire smoke if I let it. Or it is as docile as a lopo 350.

    it makes me giggle
