Sweet sounds of stock?

So what do you guys thinks has to be the best sounding STOCK engine? Exhaust being allowed as a change, but internal engine mods not allowed. And lets keep it out of the muscle car era, so pre 63. For me, it's a tough one, as I love the sound (if it even makes one) of a quiet smooth flathead Ford. But also love the sound of a stock Chrysler 392 (almost sounds mean in stock form). What your opinions?

 

A flat motor would be my first choice. Second would be a early small block chevy with a Duntov 30-30 cam.

 

Ford flathead or Ford Y-block. Definitely the most distinctive-sounding stock engines, if you ask me.

 

'69 Z/28, 302 with the #140 cam and chambered exhaust. Or a '66 AC Cobra with the 427 and the factory sidepipes

 

Y block Ford say '57 312 Thunderbird, huffed.

 

Cool Thread. I love the sounds of the W-motors. A solid lifter cam 348, or the exhaust tone of any 409!!

 

Ford Y-block for me. I've got a muffled 292 in my Fairlane. I've been kicking around the idea of some exhaust work, but the sound is pretty nice as-is.

I like a 235 chevy 6 with a split manifold , "yea" you know the sound {sweet}

 

It's gotta be the Toyota 22r? Ha! Ohhh I'm kidding.. I like a Nailhead!

My 392 was neat if smooth and quiet, the motor idled so smooth i could balance a nickle on the aircleaner while it was running. That said, i've heard a lot of really good RB motors, the 413 in my moms 65 new yorker sounded pretty good with duals on it. It was the same motor as the 63 chryslers (340hp).

 

For me it's my stock 57 283CI/283 HP fuel injected 283-sometimes just start it up and let it run to listen to it-music to an old guy's ears-has the 097 solid cam and the fuely whistle sound at idle (idles at 850 RPM)--brings back memories from late 50's early 60's when everyone was putting this cam in 265's and 283's

 

Oh man. Early V12 Ferrari.....Music.

 

With all stock exhaust, since you can make anything sound different with exhaust tuning,

Well, for the WORST sounding, I'd say any uncorked Wankel....talk about needing a muffler!

Ya know Doc you are right on this one here. They were a real nice sounding car from the factroy. nothing needed to make them sweet.

So I'll ad this one to my stock blown '57 312 Thunderbird.

I would agree, but for American V8 iron nothing sounds like a 312 with very short pipes.
