This could be the weirdest post ever. A friend of mine wants to sell me a later model SBC 350 with aluminum heads. It has been in a storage container for about six years. A big bottle of All detrgent was sitting on top of it (no intake). The bottle; a big one developed a leak and emptied into the engine. All of the fluid ended up in the oil pan. May have seeped through the head gasket and or the rings or any other gasket. I may be answering my own question here but I think the caustic nature of the soap may have rendered the engine not usable in its present state. Just wondering if it could also eat at the metals of the engine. Anyway I begged off the sale. This was supposed to be a drop in and go engine.
I'd trust it for at LEAST 9 or 10 blocks...maybe a mile...after that you're driving on borrowed time...at least you know the oil pan is clean inside ...
If it didn't have an intake on it, the detergent would have run into the valley over the camshaft and crankshaft down to the oil pan. Not something I would trust without tearing it down, but then I wouldn't trust an engine that has been sitting for 6 years without going through it.
I'd have to agree with Engine man, sitting for six years is just cause for pulling the engine down for a check out and making sure everything is ok let alone to clean any soap residue out. SBC rering kits with rods and mains and gaskets don't cost much and you would have a fresh engine that you could trust when you were done.
i would look at the cam and lifters.i wouldnt worry about rest unless it was run through motor esp.without a good rinse cycle.plus you should be ok my wife uses all and its yet to clean the oil from my shirts
with no intake on it, the detergent is the least of your worries...all sorts of critters could be inside by now....what was he thinking...even with an intake and carb, stuff finds it's way inside.
Detergents are bases, so corrosion will likely be to Aluminum parts like pistons, if you have it at all. Concentrated detergents probably will pick up water from the air, and any bleach that might have been in the detergent will contain Chlorides, which are bad news, too. Pulling the pan and the heads will likely tell the tale.
With ALL you're SURE to GAIN, I'd go against the TIDE and WISK that sucker up! Aren't you glad you came here to SURF for the answer?
I gotta ask who the fuck stores and open engine with a bottle of ANYTHING sitting on top of it? WTF? Over.
Scott, You sure didn't get a good deal on this one. I thought you had a good motor for the Lemans. Dave
uh,,, I typed washing machine brick into the search engine. figured someone had to try it, if I didnt find one,, well I was gonna try it for myself.
