Here are the codes from my engine that I recently acquired... Something doesn't match up with the date codes though, It seems like there is 1 too many numbers. The same goes for the engine stamped ID code, that has way too many numbers and no letters.. Any details would be appreciated! Thanks Head casting: 3795896 Markings: N and M (embossed, in a square right beneath the casting #) No typical date stamp. Manifold Casting: 3844457 Date: F2063 Markings: GM 2 T Block Casting: 3782870 Date: H2763 Markings: 4T Stamped ID: 854620328 (Note: 28 were stamped darker then the rest, may have been non-factory)
I just posted this on another thread... http://webpages.charter.net/darrell1/casting_numbers.html Hope you find what yer lookin' for!!
Thanks guys. I've got that far 62-67 327 etc etc, but its the date and stamped ID numbers that are throwing me off, any thoughts on them? The fact that both the block and manifold ends in 63 leads me to beleive that its a 1963 (hence 62-67), and the heads are apparently from 62-64 corvette (provided its 327, not 283)
F 20 63 means Jun 20th 1963.. F meaning 6th letter representing 6th month. check this out: http://www.nastyz28.com/sbchevy/sblock.php
the casting dates are from summer 1963. I don't have any idea about the stamped engine number, must be a canadian thing.
Thanks for the help guys. I'll have to measure the deck height to see if the block has been milled, it's probably a home-stamping jobby by the previous owner as that amount of numbers doesn't relate to anything, even VIN numbers.. and the fact it was pre-1968 means there wouldn't be any VIN id anyways.. Thanks!
Canadian Pontiacs used small block chevys and the numbers are kind of haywire. Yes, it is a Canadian thing.
Doing a google search on the head casting number on the heads show that they are what most of us call power pack heads. http://www.chevytech.info/3c3795896.html Or just Google 3795896 and the results will show up. Fair to middling mild street heads but they aren't Corvette heads. It looks like the engine was originally a lower performance 327. Not a bad thing though. What I can't understand is why be so anal about date codes and everything if the engine is for a hot rod? Maybe if you are building a 63 or 64 Impala to a 100 point Restoration that is intended to compete in restored Chevy shows against other numbers date matching cars. Parts wise it's a 63 327 with 1.72 power pack heads if you are hunting parts.
It's not that I'm being anal about a 100 point resto, just curious to see the history of what I'm working with, where it was from, when, etc.. More of an interest thing than anything else. The value of the motor would be far greater as well if it were to spec out as vette. One site had those numbers down as vette heads between 62/64.
