Just wanted to try this for myself...VINEGAR BATH...***UPDATE May 27th***

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by 3wLarry, May 15, 2011.

  1. This rusty tag took 2-3 times in fresh bath of metal rescue. I did one the old fashion way too much dust and energy. The bath is the way to go. I made try the salad dressing next.;)

This is something I've been planning to try for a while. Found a plastic 55 gallon drum to use.:cool::cool: Only have 1 gallon of vinegar, though.:eek::eek: :D:D:D

Are you using apple or grape vinegar? Isnt the molassas bath a quicker way to derust stuff?

If you can skim off enough of the crud that precipitates out to keep using it, i think you can get quite a bit of life from it.

I've heard the iron residue will turn your skin orange for a good long while-judging by what it did to some concrete-I BELIEVE IT!

How about any reports on how well it takes off residual paint or grease? Any experiences there?

from what I've seen, it only removes the rust...not the original paint...which is what I'm after.

im subscribed i tried this with safest rust remover but left it out on a sunny day and it evaporated before i got any results :( so next time il do it in the garage
i wonder if you had something in the liquid that vibrated and agitated the chemical would it break down the rust faster or maybe a small pond pump to circulate it ??

  14. Molasses works slower, in my experiences. I'm still amazed at the clean metal, when I squirt the parts off with the hose.

We have been using white vinegar to clean the inside of rusty motorcycle tanks
for years. It works great but takes time.

Looks like you should put something else in that tank of yours to up the volume so that the wheel gets covered all the way. Sort of equivalent to putting a brick in your toilet to save water. Something non reactive with the vinegar of course.

I have de-rusted a whoooole bunch of stuff using white vinegar, I'd bet that wheel would have been almost clean in 24 hours, I've had most rust off within 36 hours of real bad parts.

If you can go to Harbor Freight, they have little stainless steel brushes about the size of a toothbush, with plastic handles for 99 cents, those work good for getting a lot of the rust off after a short time in the vinegar. I usually just scrub it right in the vinegar, and then let it soak for more.

Bolts that were completely covered in rust will usually clean up in about 8-10 hours with fresh vinegar, and a stainless steel brush.

Have reused the vinegar several times, but after a few good uses, you may notice it doesn't bubble up as fast/good, and then I'd usually replace it, after those parts.

  23. So, the vinegar removes rust and paint - what about chrome........?
Anything you shouldn't put in vinegar - I've read that pot-metal in a molasses bath for example is not a good idea.....?
