    5-28-2011 33 trouble free miles.

Finally got it home. 1954 Chrysler new yorker deluxe 4 door. Need some new shoes one let me down. Motor is loose and ready for tune up and oil change. Complete brake inspection. Any cheap performance hemi upgrades?
Any good spark plug numbers or wire numbers? I would like some cheap upgrades to make it a cruiser. What type of transmission fluid is recomended? What size radials look good on these? Any input on getting a barn find ready for the road is appreciated.
If anyone has a reverse light lens, and spark plug wire covers I would be interested. Enjoy!

  2. My '54 331 came out of a 4dr New Yorker Deluxe just like that. However, there was nothing cheap about the Hemi "upgrades".

"Accel" brand type A fluid is available through NAPA, wire covers on EBay. Atlas Obsolete makes OEM repro wires, varing reports on longevity. Plugs are long reach type. Change oil & run the oil pump b 4 trying to start.

Looks like Napa beldon calls for a set part # 700105 used for fords a 289 in a 66 Fairlaine? Straight boot wires are boots long enough?

Looks like the "yellowish" ceramic plug tubes are still on the engine. I would just get a spool of quality spark plug wire, the proper ends, and make my own. The wires need a straight connector on the plug end, then push the wire up through the tube, and put the distributor connector and boot on.

Great find, I'm assuming you've washed it by now. Any pics of it clean? Any evidence of rodents in the interior?

Awesome find! That intake and carb is hard to come by (most "wet" intakes are 2bbl), it is the same setup I have on my coupe. Not much "cheap" for those engines though!

Great find. Glad your going to drive it. So many people would part a car like that out. Good luck finding cheap 331 or any early Hemi hot rod parts. I would do what cheap and drive it. Should be a runner.

Great find! Like Fivewindow Johnnie mentioned, doing the Hemi up won't be cheap but worth it in the long run. Good luck with the build!

  12. Nice find! I just picked up a '55 Desoto Fireflite with a "factory" 4bbl hemi also! And I am also on the "hemi" learning curve! :D

Any idea on what plug wires to be bought at napa or make them using the ceramic boots? What spark plugs are guys running in these?

Has anyone purchased a chevy HEI to hemi conversion? Which ones to stay away from? Thanks, Brent

If the point system doesn't float yur boat then you can have GMC Bubba redo something for you, or, go to a Mopar electronic package, P3690426. You will need a new intermediate shaft and gear assembly for the LA dizzy.
If your insulators are in good shape then new 7mm wire can be made up. You can find unfinished sets on ebay but you will need the proper crimping tool.

Since you want wire covers then you will find 8mm do not fit easily under the covers.

Send a note if you need more help.

  15. Pm me your address. I have a set of wire covers (not perfect) you can have for the cost of shipping. They aren't bent, just have some extra holes in them that you can hide or fix if you can weld.

I probably won't get them shipped till next week.

    Thanks Dan
Paint I think is original. Trunk lid is green on underside and side cardboard is green. But no sign of repaint on jambs or fender wells.

Will the 426 rubber boots work on the 331 hemi firepower covers?

426 boots are used by many on the EarlyHemi but they do not perform the requirements of the the original design.
The early system has a stepped rubber seal around the tube that seals to the valve cover by means of a larger 'washer' that is held in place and compressed by the wire cover.
The 426 boot is way too big and does not fit the top of the small early tube, nor does it offer any way to seal the annular space between the tube and the valve cover. The tube seal is there to keep crap out of the internals.....
Yes, you can install new seals and then smear some silicone crap on everything to plug the gap if you really need the 'hot' look for your more-door.

Washed up! The quarter picture is wetsanded 2000 and rubbed out below trim. You cannot tell from the picture but it cleaned up and made a great difference. Took out the plugs and drained the oil.
Filter looked good no metal but took one tube out and looks like what I supposed a 57 year old motor would. Some gunk but nothing "built up".
I am going to run some mobil delvac 1300 15w40 and run it till it is going brown and change it out for the 10w30 Brad Penn.
The spark plugs on the pass side bank looked great no oil foul or discoloration. They are old autolite AG82? Autolite resistor they say?
This is a 3/4 reach engine what plugs and brand should I run? NGK?

Its alive. Engine runs but I am at a stand still, water pump leaks out weep hole. But did fire right up and idle just fine.

Got brakes apart and will turn drums tomorrow. What is the best way to set up and bleed the brakes on this car. Master cylinder below drivers floor pan. Dual wheel cylinders up front? How do I got about bleeding?

This one will be for sale also after driving condition...

Nice find, you rarely see a HEMI with the original body attached.

You'll pretty much have to send the W/P off for a rebuild.
