I just purchased a 1964 Ford Falcon 2Dr sedan with an automatic trans and a 6 cyl engine. How can I tell which engine I have? I think the 3 choices are 144, 170, 200 CI.
I think the "law of averages" would indicate a 170, but for good ID go to http://fordsix.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=57 there is a lot of info there.
the VIN will tell what engine it had originally, fifth digit will be T 200 U 170 S 144 4 170 6 200 but you may want to look on the engine itself, for the code stamped on the block above the breather pipe.
As stated, if the engine is original you can tell by looking at the serial number. Also depending on when your engine was built: Up through December 1963 Ford used a cast on code, 144 was "N" and 170 was "T" located on the top left front of the block. It is not clear 200 was ever stamped. Starting in January 1964 Ford used a metal tag, usually mounted under the coil bracket, that gives engine identification. The engine displacement is stamped on the top left portion of the tag. Unfortunately the tags are easy to get lost, or even swapped so unless the car is very original take it with a grain of salt. Finally, you will hear 144s and 170s have 3 freeze plugs on the side of the block versus 5 freeze plugs on the 200. This is true EXCEPT, 63 and 64 200s have 3 freeze plugs.
Squirrel you are a walkin typing encyclopedia man . I appreciate you a lot . You have answered a ton of question for me. Sorry now back to your regularly scheduled thread.
