    Hey everybody,
Me and the gal are taking a roadtrip to Kansas City, Missouri(unfortunatly not with the plymouth)

We are both looking to do/have some hodrod fun while we are out there!
We will be there from Friday Morning to Monday Eve (April 29-May2nd)

Can any of you locals give us some points of interest?

    Good Food
    Great Cars
    Fun Art

    thanks alot!!!!

  2. Look up First Fridays in the Crossroads Art District for the art portion of your request. Lots of good food in that area as well. Enjoy your trip.

I was told to go to the original one on the Missouri side, not the one on the Kansas side.

Oklahoma Joe's aint bad too, over in Olathe, Ks. (I 35 south to 119th)

    Was up there last Saturday.

Tour the Boulevard Brewery. I never taken the tour the myself so I can't speak of it's "good time". I just like free samples.

Take your gal to The Country Club Plaza. Plenty of shopping and stuff to see that she'll like if she's into shopping.

Kansas City Royals baseball if you're a ball fan.

Union Station may be of interest.

The real OK Joes is a better experience, Gates is quite an experience too,
"How may I help you?". So many small BBQ joints to try in just one weekend.
BB's Lawnside has a band usually, as well as good food and cheap beers.

Here is a schedule, accuracy not guaranteed.
    http://www.hotrodexpresskc.com/events#!__events

    And for music,
    http://kcrockabilly.com/
    KnuckleheadsKC.com

stay away from the Power and Light, they'll charge you $10 a drink.

  14. The first cruise of the year is happening in Historic Downtown Liberty, MO on April 30, and there are usually a lot of old cars there.

Someone from here on the HAMB also PM'd me about the Knock off the Dust Block Party in Merriam, KS, also on April 30. I don't know much more about it than the Facebook page has.

I always try and post a complete Kansas City car events calendar each week on my blog to let people know what's happening over the next weekend, so you might tune into that to try and see what's up.

    :)

I like Oklahoma Joe's, Bates city BBQ, or if you want to take about an hour drive to Warrensburg there is a little shack down there called Perry Fosters BBQ. That is truly my favorite.

For Art there is Always the Nelson Atkins Museum. Some truly World Class stuff there. Or First Fridays as someone mentioned, lots of fun things going on with that. But it doesn't look like you will be in town for 1st Fridays. There is also the Kemper Museum of Modern Art.

If your into history or museums and things of that nature there is always The Truman Library, The Jessie James House, Ft. Osage, KC Museum, Vale Mansion, and all sorts of other historical things around here.

I'm not a local, but we go back there to visit my daughter and her family at least once a year. Yeah...you have to hit a few BBQ joints, but by all means, drive down to Peculiar, MO...it's only 15 miles from KC, and visit Pete & Jake's Hot Rod Parts. You can walk through the shop area and see the fabrication and welding going on there. Super Bell Axle is owned by the same people and is at the same location. Very interesting and impressive.

Also, once a month, the small town of Belton, MO located between KC and Peculiar, has a cruise in sponsored by Pete & Jake's. If you happen to hit it when they're having that cruise in, you'll be amazed. I figured it might consist of, oh, 20 or 30 cars at the most. I wasn't prepared for nearly 800 cars! Jason Slover, at Pete & Jakes told me it's that big most of the time.

Bryants, Gates, Zarda(?) are all OK, but if you really want good food, go to Jack's Stack BBQ, there are several around the area, all one family owned including one in Martin City sort of on the way to Belton/Peculiar, also one in the freighthouse district and one at 95th and Metcalf in Overland Park (Ks side suburbs, where I live)

There are several cruise nights out here in the burbs too, Metcalf at 91st and the Winsteads drive-in at 103rd and Metcalf all have them, some folks roll to one, then go hang at the other for variety.

BTW, do you know how Peculiar got it's name? They wanted to establish a post office there in the 1800's, so they had to come up with a name for their town, they sent several choices in to the postmaster general who rejected them all as too common, he suggested they chose a name that was unusual or peculiar.....true story!

jack stack is not my favorite, but that's why we have choices.
oklahoma joe's, if you only have time for one. there is a reason they won/win competitions. jack stack does have good side dishes.

If your coming to KC, you HAVE to have BB's Lawnside BBQ (The bossman Ryan's favorite place....haha) off 85th and Troost. I would go to BB's on Sunday late afternoon for the Blues jam and it is sorta' a stop for the "check book" & motorcycle guys.

    http://bbslawnsidebbq.com/

The "Knock off the dust party" is that weekend also:

If your gal is into Princess Di, they have an exhibit @ Union Station right now and my wife said that it is pretty cool.

If you get here early enough on Friday, I would make sure that you venture over to Lawrence, Kansas & stop @ Baxter Ford.

    http://www2.ljworld.com/news/2006/jun/12/old_ford_car_parts_keep_family_business/

Also, go to the Spencer Museum on the KU campus. They have ALL of the original VARGAS drawings and I think that you can 'preview' them on Friday's with advance notice & they make you were a pair of white gloves.

    http://www.spencerart.ku.edu/

For Saturday morning have breakfast @ Sharp's in Brookside. From about 8:15am to about 9:30 to 10ish, the "Age & Treachery" guys meet there for some car BS-ing.

    http://home.swbell.net/atrltd/

For Sat. mid-afternoon, I would just enjoy KC. Drink some Boulevard Beer on the Plaza and let your gal shop.......oh wait, don't give her the credit card!

Oh yea, for Friday night I would go to a Royals game and just get some cheep seats and watch them play the Twinkies (Twins). Check Stubhub if you have access to a printer to print them or just get some Craigslist tix.

I would definitly go to Pete & Jakes late Saturday morning-ish (they close around noon-ish). If you can talk the boss/gal into staying thru Tues., Social D is playing on Tuesday night in a VERY small venue.

If your into music, go to the Record Bar and make sure to have the "Sticky fingers" pizza.

    http://therecordbar.com/

For the Boulevard tour, make sure that you book it NOW!! They sell out FREE tours weeks in advance.

Oh yea, you could go to Knuckleheads for a Sat. afternoon Blues jam. But, just a heads up.......it is not in the best neighborhood & even my wife said that she will NEVER go there with me & the owner of the place sorta' rubbed me the wrong way a couple of years back, so I'm not a huge fan. But, a messload of my friends REALLY dig the place.

    http://www.knuckleheadskc.com/

And don't forget to have some "Grinders" food down in the Crossroads/downtown area. Grinders was featured on "Food TV" and the wings will MELT your nose hairs. Swagger in Waldo was another place that was featured on Food TV "Diners, Dives & Drive-inns".

    http://www.swaggerkc.com/

    http://www.grinderspizza.com/

If you like American Baseball history, make sure that you check out the Negro League Baseball museum. Not sure if your wife will enjoy it, it is for more of a baseball fan that enjoys reading baseball history. And down the street (driving distance) is Arthur Bryants BBQ. If you go Bryants, order your food To-Go and then just eat it there.......you will get more....haha......not that a couple pounder sandwich is enough.

One last thing, the Nelson Atkins Art Museum has Monet's water lillies panels (3 of them) together for the first time in a while @ the Nelson. If your gal/boss (haha) likes art, you could spend a half a day in there.

    http://www.nelson-atkins.org/

And have lunch at the Kemper Museum of Modern art.
