Ok...I'm new to this.. Always wanted an old car to fix and drive and I finally got one.. Now...I'm trying to figure out if I have a Chevt 216 or 235? Searched numerous sites and talked to different people. Both have said I have one or the other.. Any help would be appreciated!
if the valve cover is held down with 2 bolts in the center it is A 216, THE BOLTS ON THE VALVE COVER OF A 235 ARE AROUND THE PERIMETER I'm sure you will hear from alotta guys with more in depth knowledge,so let's hear it guys
You can't go by that. I have seen many 235s converted to accept a 216 valve cover. 2 ways to tell a 216: 1) on the passenger side of the block the pushrod cover extends from the valve cover, past the spark plugs and ends near the base of the distributor. 2) on the passenger side there is a 3 bolt kidney shaped cover and a copper oil tube.
Sounds like you have the entire car. If you do, look at the oil pressure gauge. If it's calibrated "0-15-30" it's a 216 (and possibly an early 235). If it's calibrated "0-30-60" it's for sure a (good) 235.
First thing is post and intro. Second thing is do a search. this has only been covered about 2 million times since January.
http://www.brads41-46chevys.com/id40.html This might help. gives the cast numbers and locations for 216's & 235's from 37-60 and an intro post would be nice
jcmarz is right. Except some early 235s came with the early valve cover. So you can't go by that but all 216s I have seen are sideplate engines. Which as jc said, the tappet cover extends all the way up to the valve cover. As I remember 235s have more head bolts that 216s also.
I believe you are referring to the oil distributor cover which is on the DRIVERS (left) side. Here's a good site for identification using visual cues: http://pugetsoundvintagechevrolet.org/Programs/6 cylinder engines with photos.pdf
Hes right about the early 235s which are bored out 216s. The later 235 full oil pressure have a smaller sideplate on the passenger side and no copper tube or oil distributor (kidey shaped cover) on the drivers side. I never go by the valve cover.

hope you're not referring to me, he asked a question and I tried to help him out by listing casting numbers. I wasn't being sarcastic either because casting numbers don't lie. the best way to see what motor you have.
casting numbers can lie! not sure on inline GM 6 cyl. but on small blocks they can, had a 71' 307 that casting numbers on bellhousing flange said 61' 283! the motor was out of 4dr. 1 owner car that belonged to a friends aunt that bought car new. when i worked at a engine rem. plant in the 80's these issues popped up.
There was another thread yesterday that has these same comments, what I dont get is how hard it is to follow the rules? I mean they are right there when you first sign up. Its not like its secret. the second thing is, how many times does this have to be posted? One google search or a search here or at a lot of other rod sites and the same info pops up? How many times do the casting numbers have to be posted? Sarcastic? probably. I'll PM you the link to the next 100 times this question gets posted by a noob. I'll bet a week from now you will think its a waste of bandwidth too.
Some of the posts here crack me up. Someone, usually a new guy, asks a question and someone jumps in with no answer, but replies with a nastily worded "This has been covered before. Do a search". Uh, okay. Hmm, it seems like, over the years, almost everything has been covered. So, let's try to get the moderators to not allow any questions from anybody about anything that has been covered previously. (I am being sarcastic...I hope you realize that) Just calm down and try to offer real help. No need to get your panties wadded up.
216 heads work on a 235. With that, a 216 valve cover fits. So don't use the valve cover or head casting number to determine what block you have.
No, they don't. At least, they don't work on 1953-62 235s----fewer head bolts on a 216. However, all you need to do to run a pre-'54 valve cover on a '54-'62 cylinder head is steal the long hold down studs from an eary engine and use the early style valve cover gasket.
Nope - panties not in a bunch. maybe this will help. every one of these threads has some info to help identify the 2 engines. All I did was put "216" in the search bar. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=569675&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=569362&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=562025&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=560837&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=559125&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=552360&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=552737&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=549897&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=548653&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=471744&highlight=216 http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=92819&highlight=216 note to self: dont open up any more stupid threads......
Had a 51 GMC 3/4 ton pickup with a transplanted 235 in it. When I got it the engine had a rod knock, so I pulled the engine and removed the head and of course the crank. The head was a 235 head because the valve cover had bolt holes along the flange. The head was to be surfaced and valves ground, but it had several cracks. So the machine shop got me one, but it had no valve cover flange mounting holes! I thought about it and a friend had a 216 with the old style valve cover. He had an extra valve cover, so I went ahead and mounted the head on the engine and fired it up, only to find out there was no oil going to the rocker shaft. I talked to Chevy dealer and he said I need this weird head bolt that had a hole drilled in the threaded end up to a cross hole above the threads. I put this in and had oil up at the rockers. Needless to say somehow this worked and with all of the head bolts from the old 235 head (except for the weird bolt). So what gives??? Maybe they used the old valve cover on early 235's???? And why did I need the oil hole headbolt?? Was it because early 235 heads, if they indeed used the early valve cover had to have the oiling head bolt? The newer heads had passages to the rocker shaft supports??? These engines were weird any way you look at them, what with those weird valve stems!!!! Update: Answering my own question is this link: http://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/engine_identification.htm this link says that early 235 engines used the old style valve cover!! Oh yeah!!
Your answer here: http://www.1954advance-design.com/Web images/1958-60-rocker-oil/1958-rocker-arm-lubrication.html
1937-1940 First design 216s (tall side cover and 4 bolt flywheel) 1940-52 Second design 216s (tall side cover and 6 bolt flywheel) 1953-54 third design 216s (short side cover and 6 bolt flywheel) ___________________________________________________________ 1941-1952 First series 235 (tall side cover - 6bolt flywheel - Dipper) 1953-1954 second series 235 (short side cover -6bolt flywheel - Dipper) 1954-1963 third series 235 (short side cover -6bolt flywheel - Full Pressure) Valve cover means nothing. Side cover only identifies early or late model. Casing numbers or pull the head and measure bore is the only way to go. Small variations from year to year pistons, rocker arms, camshafts, motor mounts, starters, valves, water pumps, pulleys, dampeners, oil pumps, oil pans, fuel pumps bell housing etc change from year to year. I have worked on many over the years. Best designed 235 engine is the 1955-1963 models with 848 head. Coolest 235 engine is the 1941-1952 (fairly rare I have seen only 4 or 5 in the last 20 years) Best for building a wayne engine - When they start making heads again
What is a '53-'54 216 with a short side cover? 216s (with a tall side cover) were available in 1953 trucks and could only be had in a passenger car on a fleet order. Everything in '54 was 235, except for the 261s in medium duty trucks.
I wouldn't say casting numbers lie or are the definitive answer. Castings can be brought back and bored or stroked to use again in later models. A casting number with a date code and physical characteristics is more accurate. You have to look at all the info....not just one piece to determine what you have.
Especially with a basic engine design that was used for 25 years, with later models that could easily be transplanted into early model cars. Not much different from flatheads....how many '40 Fords still have a '40 engine in them?
