I prefer no music, but if you do play some, remember that you're there to provide ambiance. You're NOT there to be the star of the show.
So many DJ's think they're the one people come for. They're not. It's about the cars and visiting friends.

I like the idea of early punk, etc... be different, mix it up. If you do play a '50s - 60's song, play one thats NOT popular. It'll be more appreciated. Get that Troggs album and DON'T play Wild Thing, I dare ya!

    Have fun with this!

Hey!! I'm an old fat guy!!:D

  3. I like all kinds of music, besides rap-crap or classical, pretty much anything goes - rockabilly being the favorite. Reverend Horton Heat is awesome, but maybe a little edgy for most folks, so Brian Setzer is a little more mainstream. Southern rock would go over well, such as Lynyrd Skynyrd or Molly Hatchet. Someone already mentioned Tom Petty and how about some Steve Miller and Bob Segar (except Old Time Rock and Roll - I'm tired of that one). Even some 'rocked up' Blues is cool Stevie Ray Vaughn or George Thorogood would hit the spot.

Keep the Volume reasonable and show goers will love it. I guess the most important thing is to constantly mix it up - if you you play the same 'different' long enough, it will soon become tiresome just like the music you were trying to replace!

I hope this catches on at every car event across the entire globe.

Well, I'm an old fart, and I enjoy some 50's music IN THE BACKGROUND. Loud anything sucks at a car show, I'm there to see cars and talk to the folks that built them. However, if you want me to stand between your speakers with my eyes closed and really digging it, play some RUSH or AC/DC! I said I'm OLD, didn't say I was living in the past.

Yes, yes it does. But I'd be more than happy to provide you with ear plugs, or ignore the iPod you have that's pumping whatever ELSE in your ears.

(Couldn't help myself but to respond to this!)

It's all a matter of taste, really. I think some things are, without question, over done sometimes. Personally? I can't stand trailer queens and seeing cars that are treated like statues rather than what they are--CARS. Not everyone would agree with me on that, just like not everyone will agree on the music they want to listen to.

Just to throw this out there, though: Buddy Holly doesn't get played enough, period. Most people only know one song by him, "Peggy Sue," and that's it. There's a massive quantity of music that any number of people whouldn't mind listening to. Johnny Cash, for instance, will please a LOT of people. I agree with the people that said Southern Rock, too. Just because there tend to be a large amount of old school people at car shows doesn't mean we're OLD!

I'd LOVE to hear a DJ throw on some Horrorpops or the Clash... but it seems to NEVER happen!

I think it boils down to the crowd, and what sort of car show it is. If it's got a real strict set of rules for the cars shown, then the music should follow suit. If it's more of an eclectic crowd, then follow that. Not playing anything at ALL isn't a necessary option.

I too hate 50's music, I grew up in the 70's and never listened to 50's crap until I started going to car shows. Mix it up with a little of all kinds of music (except rap)

In your honor, I will play some Clash at the VW show. From what I've seen at the VW show in other years, Beatles go over good plus late 60s Woodstock type music. Must be the hippie vibe from all the air cooled buses and bugs. Now where did I leave that Dylan compilation...

I like a nice mix of Bobby Sherman and Lulu, maybe a little Lionel Richie. Englebert Humperdink always seems to be a favorite......

  15. A few years back at NSRA/Louisville I noticed a nice mix of music. Songs like "Hot Rod Heart", "Rumble Seat", and "455 Rocket" were spun with other themed songs and the previous mentioned classics/oldies. I dislike the 50's doowop and cheesy DJ retoric, but it was nicely mixed. Just keep the tunes mixed and as background music. I think we are all there for the cars anyway.

I prefer live music, with break music between bands not too loud. The LSRU and Hot Rod Revolution have great live music. The stage is set up so as not blast away everybody at the show. You can dig on the bands, or not. Seems to work pretty damn good.

Hotrod Heart is a great song, I just recently added it to the mix. Car Shows being what they are, I guess some 50s type music will be played. I just want to find the lesser played stuff along with the more eclectic mix I bring. As far as someone not wanting to hear Hot rod Lincoln, yes it's over played...there are many different versions of it, this is the one I play as it has tributes to many different artists in it..

For all the women in their 45+ years, maybe some Petula Clark or Nancy Sinatra, stuff like that. I used to hear that stuff in the early '70s shopping with my mom. We get lots of women at car shows.

  19. Here are a bunch of "Car Tunes" that I have on my I pod right now. They all have to do with a car, a road, or a trip. It's not all of the car songs made, but a good head start on a good playlist for a cruise in or show.
I've listed the song, the artist, the album, the genre and even the track number on the album the song came from.
Awright, you asked for them..... now your're gonna get 'em. I hope this works and doesn't cause any problems. There is something for everyone here and they are all car tunes I gathered that I play for various car shows and fundraiser functions involving cars or 'car guys'. they go over very well and I get tons of positive comments on the tunes. I think everyone is getting big boppered and twisted out at cruise nights. THE LIST:

I think what many of us are trying to say in several different ways that the DJ and his music should be background sound at a much lower decibel rating that allows one to enjoy the show and visit with other rodders without having to shout at each other. I haven't met the rodder yet who makes it a point of going to a rod trot expressly to sit and listen to the DJ and his music. But I have known several at different events who make a serious effort to park the car as far away from the D's booth, stage or speakers as they can and still be part of the event.

What could be a pleasant background sound ends up dominating and taking over an otherwise great event a lot of the time. At what used to be my favorite PNW event the speakers in the park are so loud that you can hear the music down town a quarter mile away at times.

Fordy Acres Car Farm...nice list, I have several of those. I had a guy compile a collection of strictly auto related stuff. I'm digging on some Pearls Mahone & The One Eyed Jacks right now. Fujiyama Mama!

Mr48chev...I get it. When I first started, I sorta took the lead from others and how they ran a show and made some changes. I've had people unplug my speakers before, even when I was at a nice level. I can't control sound levels just for the person who parks under my speakers. If I had the money I would buy a scissor lift platform and put the speakers about 15 feet up on that. It's able to be heard without being loud right in ones ear. There is a DJ company that does that in the area and it works. I am not so concerned about my music covering a lot of area, but i am concerned about my voice for announcements. So my microphones are higher than the music. I don't talk a lot but show organizers need announcements made for various things and that is important to be heard.

  26. Its all about the crowd. At an average show around here, the old people get there first, so if you gotta play the real old stuff, try it then. Most people under the age of 50 dont really relate to anything from the 50's or early 60's anyway. Mix it up a little. Rolling Stones, The Who, Eric Clapton, or The Doors are always popular, but throw some catchy new stuff in too. White Stripes, Black Keys, Stone Temple Pilots are all decent. If the show ends late, usually the older people go home and the younger crowd rolls in. I personally like heavier music, but a happy medium will keep spectators at the show longer. I know I've left early because of shitty music. Beep, Beep, Beep by The Playmates makes me want to kick a puppy.

  27. But if you gotta have car songs, I've got a disc I made for my old man. Here's whats on it:
Jerry Was a Race Car Driver - Primus
Hot Rod Lincoln - Les Claypool
Radar Gun - The Bottle Rockets
    The Distance - Cake
    Power Windows - Billy Falcon
1000 Dollar Car - The Bottle Rockets
    Stickshifts and Safetybelts - Cake
    I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide - ZZ Top
    Going Mobile - The Who
    Black Sunshine - White Zombie
Running Down A Dream - Tom Petty
Two Lane Blacktop - White Zombie
    Thunder Express - MC5
The Motorcycle Song - Arlo Guthrie
    Ramblin Man - Allman Brothers
Cadillac, One Piece At A Time -Johnny Cash
Bitchin' Camaro - The Dead Milkmen
    Lowrider - War
    Rumble - Link Wray

Tried to fit some oddballs in there, cause I hate hearing the same song over again.

I getting so tired of listening to other peoples' noise polution I want to scream. You're bombarded by it everywhere. Just about every store you patronize these days thinks you want to listen to their particular brand of noise, LOUDLY! or watch their damn videos. It's even being played outdoors in mall parking lots for Christ's sake. I wonder if they knew how much I more time I would take in their establishment BUYING things if I didn't have to listen to their polution, would they feel compelled to knock it off or at least down.

Very nearly as bad is going to an outdoor car event where you have a car owner thinking he needs to put on a show by starting his motor and reving it so high you duck for cover to avoid the flying parts you KNOW are coming.

I vote a big NO! on ANY music at car events, so I most certainly do not want to hear LOUD music, and you don't want to get me started on some jerkoff behind a microphone that thinks that he's the show that the captive audience came to hear.

  29. That may seem like a good idea in theory, but the silence can be deafening. I agree that the music should be in the background, but eliminating it completely would make for a long, boring day.
