I have a 39 ford transmission that i picked up on ebay and was told that it had been gone through and new gaskets installed but there is a problem its leaking oil from the countershaft and reverce idler shaft retainer pin is this normal or was there something that was missed when it was put together ?

Every one I've ever had leaked some. If it's leaking bad you can slide the contershaft front and back and put a little RTV in there which will help. If they're really leaking it's usually a sign of a worn countershaft and/or case. There's really nothing inside, like seals or anything, that could have been missed.

Part of an old Ford marking it's territory.

I just rebuilt the transmission in my '39 and yes the new countershaft that I installed leaked. I pulled this shaft back out and turned two grooves in the shaft to accept O-rings and reassembled. I now have O-ring seals on each end and no leaks!
