    39 chevy coupe trying to figure out the motor numbers now. I know its a 57 sbc with poer pack heads. 4 speed with Hurst.

    If it was a '57 motor, it would have side motor mounts...yours doesn't, so it's a 55-56.

    Looks like the engine has no provision for side mounts making it a 1955, 1956 or 1957 so it probably has some value.

    This one aint a start . I got enuf projects now. I just cant walk away from an old car or a old part. Its causing havoc at home and storage is bulging.

    motor casting numbers are 3731548 and F926 F?. web sites says 57 283 4bbl powerglide.

    Are the valve cover bolts staggered or straight across from each other?

    its got an oil filter on it so that eliminates 55 motors.

    I got it running today. Put a coil, condensor and points in it and it runs beautiful.

  26. It looks to me as though you have a '57 block as you suspected (looks like front mounts to me) and later heads (straight across valve cover bolts) as rust runner noted. Check the head casting numbers to find out.

    that's what I thought, too. 57 was still front mounts, 58 went to side.
