Kev, Got to agree that Joe McClelland's Sports Coupe is the way to GO ! Just the right profile and stance. Seems to fit your idea of a sport coupe. Just add the right little changes to make it yours.

We had a our Banger running on the stand... It sprung a leak. Found a few cracks in the head. As it turns out.... Good A model heads are hard to find. Luckily my buddy Mike had a real nice one listed right here on the Hamb.

We should be hearing that clucking Banger sound again real soon. This time with no water in the oil issues.... We hope.

The new Banger is done. I got the Sporty out of Hibernation last night and looks like we will driving before long. I pulled the body off so we can install the new engine and trans. I'm going with hyd brakes, So Cal dropped axle, and '34 wires with Coker blackwall Big's and Little's.

Here's a few pics of the progress....

Got some more work done tonight. Drilled the new SoCal 4" dropped axle with (21) 1" holes. I used a Milwaukee Magnetic Slugger drill. This is by far the best tool for this job. Drills a perfect hole and only took about an hour from start to finish. After a little de-burring it should be ready for paint or chrome. The SoCal axle is a killer piece. The quality is the best I've seen.

    Here's a few pics....

I've been stripping a '40 Ford frontend this morning for the brakes and wishbones. Everything was going JUST FINE.... Then the perch bolts. Damn they are stuck. Here's a few pictures.

Any tricks to getting these damn perch bolts out?

Oh man, this car is going to be cool. I love the plans and the axle looks awesome. Tell me more about that contraption you used to drill it with, never seen anything like that before. So is it getting a 4cyl. engine or a V8?

Did you use some heat from a torch on the frozen bolts? That might free them up. You said something about wire wheels? Lets see your plans on that.

Keep up the good work. Glad to see you working on this one again.

The drill is a Milwaukee magnetic base drill that uses a broach type bit similar to an end mill. It has a spring loaded center pin to line everything up with your punch mark. It's intended use is for steel fabrication, for column base plates. We use it in the electrical field for all kinds of different things. It also works great on Hot rod stuff. ;)

It is getting a souped up 4 banger instead of the originally planned V8.

I'm going to put some heat on the frontend parts in the morning. After a couple of bloody knuckles from the hammer and chizzle... I'm done beating on it.

Stay tuned for more updates coming soon.

Same basic tire and wheel set-up as the first two cars. These are 16's and mine are 17's, but that's the only difference. The last picture is of my tires, but mounted on Chevy artillery wheels. Swap them to '34 wires and that's the plan... What do you guy's think?

Do you have to run some sort of adapter plates behind wire wheels on '40 drums?

Did some research.... Seems like the wires need some support that the hydraulic drums don't provide. The receiver ring that the wires mount to is wider than the '39 and up drum mounting surface. It's hard to fathom, but seems like Henry didn't think about us Hot Rodders on that one. Good thing we have Vern and Speedy Bill.

4 Banger with 17" Wires? Sounds like you're doing this one up just right!

The Sport Coupe is such an odd ball mobile, it'll be such a cool and unusual Rod. Nice.

Glad to see you are keeping the banger. I wish the mag drill we have at work had the support on the bottom like the one you are using. I don't think the shops drill would live very long using the big bits like that with out the support

I've always been a Sport Coupe nut, mainly because you just never see them Hot Rodded right. Most people just yank all the top stuff that makes them so different and cool. They look great chopped too.

    Thanks Dave...

We are trying.... I'm ready to ride this one around.
