  5. Black ... I paint the block heads and pan on every engine a simple black ... why? Black hides greasy smears etc. (I actually painted everything black on the last engine ... including intake, valve covers, and air breather).

Sure, the next obvious comment would be "why not just build an engine that doesn't leak?" Answer: they don't leak, but they do accumulate road dirt, spills from oil changes, overspray from rad overflow etc. Black hides most of the mess and cleans up relatively easily.

Guess I should add ... my cars are not shows cars and they get driven a lot. I like simple.

Mine is Single Stage Dupont Black with polished and chrome accents. The background on the Hildebrandts valve covers will be gold and the spark plug wires are clear red. Nothing looks better then Black and polished and aluminum.

What color is 63 year old grease?

  9. Some things to consider, first is it in an open car or covered up by a hood and/or sheetmetal? Second which motor is it & is there a lot of polished aluminum or chrome? Last, what is your main body color? I think all 3 of those may be deciding factors

I really like the yellow one.
My question is will it hold up to the heat ?
Can you buy yellow high temp. engine paint ?
Do you think a painted block will hold up on a blower motor?

    Mine is black.

An old engine builder once told me that he painted all the engines he built black because it helped dissipate the heat. Any truth to that?

yeah....but more importantly, it keeps them from leaking oil. Or is it that you can't see the oil leaks.

  20. I'm getting closer to making this decision myself. Can an engine be painted with any paint, or does it have to be a high-heat enamel?

You can paint it with anything, but you may have problems near the exhaust ports and crossover with some paints. Prep before paint is important, get it clean

good question... 223 Ford 6, out in the open, (might run hood sides, not sure), no polished aluminum, very little chrome. lots of glass! glass float bowls (2 of 'em), glass sediment bowls (2, and one on the fuel pump), and glass air cleaners..

Body color is going to be based off engine color. when I decide on an engine color then I'll decide on something that matches it..

But I've got other engines that need color too... Rockets (303's and a 394), Straight 8 Olds, Straight 8 Buick, 2 218 Chryslers, and a 425 Olds... I just like ideas!!

Man thanks a ton, that really means a lot! The silver on yours looks incredible. I'd like to have some progress pics of my '35 up soon. The engine bay is getting close with the exception of me rebuilding my 97's. I'm sure I'm a little ways off from that.

My little straight-8 is rust-colored ... that'll change when I pull the fenders off to straighten 'em.
