Ok, i got some information,MSRA member Gene Dornseif went down and talked to goodwill about their parking lot, as most of you know its locked and off limits, well Gene asked about that lot and they agreed for us to be able to use the lot, heres the stipulation, they would like a donation to Goodwill-Easter Seals

So basically were going to take at the minumum a $3 donation per car (or more thats up to your good nature) to get into the lot, dont complain or bitch, its for a good cause, plus its only $3 dig under you seat cushions!!, plus you have a spot to park and hang out for "Porkys Wake" as Gene puts it!

We also would like to make sure we keep this parking lot clean when we are done for the night.

the lot will be open at 5 and till 10:30, dont be early cause you wont be getting in.

Another thing, if you want to burn your tires etc etc, dont do it in this lot, its not an MSRA event but MSRA members talked to them about the lot and we dont want this to look bad on them.

If you have any questions send me a message or post it on here and ill try and answer it.

  2. Goodwill takes donated cars too
be careful what you bring and where you park it....

    Titus and Gene-
Thanks for the parking info. University Avenue is so screwed up right now it will still be a tough time getting anywhere close. I went by there about 11:15 this morning on my way to the chrome shop and the drive-in lot was a mess with cars coming and going and there were about 30 people standing in line outside waiting to get in.

    Paper Dog-
Thanks for the auction info. It will be interesting to see how much people are willing to pay for nostalgia. I have my bidder's number just in case there's something I can afford.

Just heard about this, was always a place to go when I came home, last cruised there years ago in my '85 Pro-Street T-Bird during Brainerd weeknd, the police saw me unload it behind Wendy's and had me load it back up after a couple of laps,Florida tags, thought I was there to street race, ended up selling to someone there in the cities.RIP Porky's you'll be missed.

I'll get pics. Heading out in about an hour.

  8. This and the Solid Gold McDonald's in Milwaukee remodeling to Imitation Gold Plated New McDonald's really wrecked my week. Lots of good memories of Porky's going back over a decade.

We tried going to the new one to the west a couple years ago after the 5-0 shut down the strip Sat night during BTTFs and it was closed.

I wish I could make it tonight, sounds like a lot of fun.

  9. If Porky's had the support earlier that they've had over the last few days we wouldn't be talking about their closing. The line for food tonight was 2-1/2 hours. The traffic was amazing and the burnouts were nonstop. RIP Porky's

I don't want to argue, but don't kid yourself. The light rail is what killed it. You do realize there will be NO on street parking when it's done? Porkys lot simply isn't big enough to support the amount of traffic that place had. And yes, tonight was NUTS! Here's pics. I have a bunch of video's. I'll post them as soon as i figure out how to get them from my phone to my computer.

  12. Ya I here ya Gordy. Progress sucks!!
Progress according to who? The Met Councils brand of progress! The light rail down Univeristy Ave is as far from progress as you can get. It will most likely take any remaining business away from St Paul and send it to Minneapolis.
Porky's is only the first, are at least most noteable so far, closing to take place. There will be many more. That's progress!! Time for a "Lost Twin Cities 3" documentary. To quote a famous song "you don't know what you've got till it's gone"
    End of rant

Thanks TURK for the GREAT pictures. I was there from about 4:30 till 7:30. I see I even got in one of your pictures. It was fun listening to some of the older guys that have been hanging out there since the '50s. One of them has a whole folder of Porky's history.

This was actually the second Porky's opened. The first was at 58th and Lyndale in Minneapolis opened in 1951 and there was also a Drive Inn that Ray Truelson opened on 35th and Hiawatha in Minneapolis called the Flat Top.

I'll have to get a hold of Jerry and see If I can get a copy of the picture of his F-100 next to Porky's. He was going to take another one this morning with the F-100. It wasn't there last night.

Just watched coverage of Porky's closing on both channel 4 and 5. Looks like it was just as busy today as it was the last two. Longgggg Lines.

Here's the articles from Saturdays Mpls. Tribune

So I am sitting here feeling all nostalgic and shit...and I got to thinking. It would be sweet to find a nice picture of porky's, something I could frame and hang in my garage (I couldn't get any decent ones with my camera). Does anyone have any leads to where I could find a nice picture or two? I don't want one of those LED/neon lighted pics, or one with musclecars in it...simply a nice one of the building and signage, or a nice piece or artwork someone created.

I'm gonna email the St Paul police chief and think him. I think others should follow suit.
