Bought some 450's tonight to replace the 600 's that were on my tunnel ram. Now I can have half the work to set the carbs up and no vacume stuff to fiddle with. I had to buy the whole sha-bang to get them, that's why they're on a ford intake, I'm not switching to ford power....lol
I've been laid up the past couple days with the back issue and Mr. Moming it since the kids had a couple days off last week. I got a couple hrs. in today though while the kids were at school and starting cutting the body line out of the lower quarter. It turns out they were radiused before about an inch n half higher than what I cut. Someone welded in a stock filler piece from the backside, I wish I new a little more about the history of this thing. Anyway here's where I stopped and the next move will be 1/4 inch brake line welded in for the lip. I experimented a couple ways to bend it in a flowing mannor trying to stay ahead of the head scratching.
Sweet ride! Henry J's are so cool my friends a big blk chevy in his 468 cu. straight axle it runs low 10's and carries the front wheels for 100' it's awesome have funHe runs at New England Dragway.
I welded that brake line in, what a bitch welding to that old thin sheetmetal. A little filler once the weather warms up and that should do that. I got my center section and axles back from the rebuilder, this was the old 4.11 section out of the t-bucket. It was totally rebuilt with a spool and of course new bearings and longer studs on the axles. No matter how you do it the job isn't easy to get that center back in the housing. I balanced it on a floor jack which worked pretty well but still akward at times.
This is my Henry J (Henry J Puggle that is). I adopted a puggle named Henry last fall after my Dixie Belle passed on. So he got a J added to his name. I love your HJ and I posted one I saw at last years Garlits show
I dont know how i missed this thread. The Henry is looking very good! wheel wells look really cool too.
Thanks always good to hear the good I finished up the lips and bolted the tires back on for a look, these quarters had three layers of patches on them. I figured they couldn't get more butcherd than they were lol The lower front gets pulled back in a bit with the support rod from frame to fender but is pretty close without the bar. The next step is to swap front springs, the current fronts have a couple rubber blocks in them. I'm hoping for the same height without the spacers.
the car looks great, as a fellow new yorker i hope to see it out this year. I would love o have one myself
Hey the HJ is looking great. I like the post you had about the 3 layers on the quarters. I know where your coming from. Ran into the same stuff doing mine. Keep up the good work. Is it going to hit the streets this summer?
It'll be on the track first but I hope to have it out there this summer. The first Gasser Series race is May 14th, it will not be done for that but I hope to have it at Thompson Oh. the first of June for their nostalgic race. Somehow I need to squeeze more time in on it to get there.
Ha Ha, I went to Rochesters swapmeet today and bought a nice 69-71 nova gas tank that sure looked like it would fit. The damn thing was about 2 inches to wide to fit under the car, just when you think you got the tiger by the tail he bites you in the ass...lol Some previous owner had stepped the last 6 inches of the rear frame rails in to line up the leaf springs on the rear. I guess that was easier than welding new perches on the rear..lol
I've been plugging away, changed front springs and found that the king pins are shot in the process. The cheapest I found was 115 through Willow Run KF, so I ordered those but didn't install them yet. I had ordered a header kit and had it waiting until I got the springs swapped. Well as luck would have it I found a set of Dynatec over chassis stepped tube headers for a oval track car. They were brand new and only 50 bucks, retail was 205 for the non stepped design. So it was a great deal and figured they wouldn"t fit but could be made to fit with parts of that kit I had. The kit was a 1.75 tube, these headers stepped from 1.67 to 1.75, so it was a slip fit. I"ll tell everyone it's the latest design, 1.75 to 1.67 then back to 1.75...lol I got one done today and hope to have the other done by Monday. I still need to dress up the welds and grind the inside of the flange on the welds too. a look from the side, these might get coated white
I've been swamped with work keeping my fleet running, but your build pics inspired me to put a little time aside for my HJ. I braced it up and cut the floor out today. If you want to call it a floor. More like a screen door dipped in acid.
Got the other side together, a little finish grinding and check that off the list ! Next will be the fuel tank issue, I'm trying to find a small steel tank for under the floor but nothing yet. Front height for now without the added weight of the hood and radiator. I was standing on the front crossmember bouncing the car to watch suspension travel and I'll be damned if the front tires didn't come off the ground on the 7th bounce ! Look out Mr. 550coupe....lol
I went out and picked up the engine today, it barely fit in the truck, pretty cool to see it in the garage. I still need a few parts and do a few things in the engine bay before it can go in, but I'm ready to light it off and wake the neighbors ! ha ha ha
We need video of that thing running. Hope to see it at Thompson this year. As long as you don't get a tummy ache. LOL.
