We got off of I40 and drove about 60 miles of route 66 through Oatman AZ. This place is really cool. It was a gold mining town and was in full swing in the 1940's.

We were greeted by one of the town mules; they are really friendly and this one came over and put his head on my lap so I would pet him.

These next few are the same stretch of 66. It was beautiful.

I think I would have bought a GM crate motor, thrown it in and made the trip and worried about getting the 327 right when I got back and then stick the crate motor in a project.

    Back to the road trip

It looks like you guys are way too much fun on that trip to call it a working trip.

We rolled in to Flagstaff Az late and I was frozen from all the leaky air that blows into the van. Turned out it was 36 degrees. No wonder.

It's got to be nice to be able to take the time to do that rather than looking at the center stripes and side marker posts until you hallucinate from being way beyond tired. My road trips always seem to come under the Gotta make miles and not under the lets have fun and see what we can see mode.

Oh, what I wouldn't give for that garage! Sure beats the space in my little car-and-a-half garage.

Been at all these places going the other way w/ the Kontinentals. I love I-40. There is a great little mexican diner called Joe and Aggie's in downtown Holbrook that has really good burritos. Should grab a couple before you get back on the road. Here a picture of Will and I in that same town in front of the diner a few years back on the way to California. Also a pic of Chuck B and me in front of that same muffler shop.......amazing what can happen in 5 short years.(actually I guess it didn't change that much) We were there in May 2006. One last shot of me in front of this cool coffee shop called the Plainsman right down the street from the Wig-Wam. Have a safe trip and see you on Wed when the calvary arrives from Wellington.

Sunday was a long, beautiful day. The perfect day really; full of a mix of fun, toil, laughter, interesting people, beautiful scenery and a little drama.

It started out by touring Winslow Az and then getting off I40 for more backroad driving. Most of the day was spent heading east on I60.

I need to hit the road so the following is a series of photos from the day, ending with pics of the little town in NM that I was stuck in waiting for jack to return from a 90 mile round trip fuel run. The van only has a10 gallon tank and many of the small towns we went thru were either out of business or closed on sunday. But nobody drives on Sunday; right?

  30. Thanks for sharing some great photos of your journey. It is by far in my opinion some the most beautiful parts of the country.

    Safe travels.
