1930 to 1960 What Would You Buy?

If you could go back to any single year between 1930 and 1960 and buy one car to bring back to the present time, what would it be? Passenger car, race car, truck, anything. My choice would be my first car, a 40 Ford Deluxe coupe.

 

ha. i think about this all the time..... guess i never came up with a real answer though-too many choices!

 

Tough call.... Tossup between 1932, 1933, or 1934 Ford 3 window coupe, 1940 Ford Standard Coupe, or 1940 Willys Coupe....

 

I would take a 36 ford 3 window.

a '34 Ford 5 window from the lakes or salt flats is the car I covet... but if I could only bring one back, it would be something like this. I could then sell it and buy lots of cool cars

I would go back to 1960 and buy someones show car or dragster built in the early 50's.By 1960 the show car would have deteriorated a bit or be out of style and the drag car would have been blown up a time or three.Either way the cars would be cheeeeeeeep.

A 1951 Pontiac 2 door fastback, that actually still has the hood ornament on it, lol.

Actually, I'd like to go back and buy the '37 2 door sedan from my grandfather.

 

I'd go through some vintage HOT ROD magazines and pick one from the "for sale" section in back.

your dates dont go far enough for me mine would be a 1961 starliner 390 hp

but to stay within your boundaries would either be a power pack 57 belair or a 58 300 chrysler hardtop .... i think , but dont hold me to it

 

While there are many that come to mind.
I think I would go with a 1940 Lincoln Continental Cabriolet.

 

Great responses. Hard call. I'm a bit surprised no one has said a famous lakes or indy car. How about Doan Spenser's 32? Keep it or sell it when you got back doesn't matter. The pics are great! Seems to me the choices say a lot about HAMBers.

 

i like building 30s cars and i like driving 50-60s rides. just my thang.

 

In the event a time machine be invented, and I had the sensibility to not jack with the events that shaped this great nation I would go back to 1957 to buy one or both of these...



or if we can go to 1961 either or all of these....





...there are others I would probably do first but why give you all ideas?

I'm with you. I had a 40 Ford when I was in high school. Would love to have another.

I guess it depends whether we're talking about a retirement fund, a vintage racer, a driver, something with personal/sentimental value, something to build...

If it's suddenly going to fall out of someone's wallet and land in my driveway I'll take a Ferrari 250TR, or a Merc 300SLR, or one of the '30s Auto-Union or Mercedes GP cars. If Santa's feeling pinched I'll take an Allard J2X, or a Lister-Chevy with a good history, or some of the '50s GP cars; I'm not greedy. One of the Novi champ cars is well up the list but not quite at the top.

There's lots of wonderful stuff from the '30s the likes of which we'll never see again, Minervas and Isottas and Duesies and even the big Cadillacs and Lincolns, carrying a whole Camry's mass in chromium.

And at a somewhat more proletarian level there's the sheer perfection of the '53 Studebaker coupes, and certain emotional ties to a '56 Ford Country Sedan and a '56 Lincoln Premiere.

But if there were one car from that period...one car, such as it is...at alternate nanoseconds I'd say Cobb's Napier-Railton, or the Railton Mobil Special. You can just never have enough Napier Lions.

Decisions, decisions...

 

Since were dreaming here Bill. I would want this one. I guess I'll just have to build something close.

It would have to be a 32 roadster or a 40 coupe. Maybe a 60 a pontiac. I dont know I cant decide
