And on the right side of the picture .. the late Bill Mataka.
Just over Bill's shoulder it apprears to be Ed "Dutch" Schaefer.

A USAC sticker on the car, yet with Sonny & Dutch there it would have had to been in the east.
The one tire showing tells us it was a dirt track .... but where? I bet "racerbillyc" knows.

Both were superb chauffeurs and had outstanding careers.
I knew and enjoyed the company of both.
Others will add to this &/or have a different opinion, I’m sure.

DUNCAN 8 ARDC Championships
58 ARDC Feature Wins
1 Indy 500 Start
1 Formula One Start

SCHAEFER 4 ARDC Championships
1 SMRC Championship
78 ARDC Feature Wins

With vision in only one eye, Dutch could not pass the physical exam. Therefore (UNFAIRLY) wasn’t permitted to run Indy.

Vision in one eye gives a person poor depth perception. Some how Dutch was able to more than compensate for this.

To me, Dutch was more exciting to watch.

He was the winner of the last race he drove in...1977 at Bloomsburg, PA.

The idea is to win races .. With 78 ARDC feature wins (plus more with the SMRC) ….
CARL EDWARD “DUTCH” SCHAEFER (aka the Dutchman) gets my vote!!!

From Ron Hutchinson (HUTCHO) in Austrailia

How to explain handling

Understeer / Push: .. You hit the wall with the front of the car.
Oversteer / Loose: .. You hit the wall with the back of the car.
Horsepower: .. How fast you hit the wall.
Torque: .. How far you take the wall with you.

Still looking for this car. The picture of the white one is the last version I know off. Rumor has it that it changed owners a couple times since and is now in Canada. Thanks in advance for any more leads.
Dan

We went to Loudon to the vintage race car meet 5-18-11 with the pictures and met a lot of great folks. Many new the driver Art Rousseau and a couple new of the builder Alton "Pop" Jones (my grandfather). Still looking for leads to the car's location.
Thanks, Dan

From above:
"DUNCAN 8 ARDC Championships
58 ARDC Feature Wins

1 Indy 500 Start
1 Formula One Start"

I believe the Formula One start was the Indy race when they were included in the world championship for a few years.

Joe, and Ken, Have pondered "the question" as posed for a day, or two now, and here's my best response. What a great era of the ARDC to have witnessed as a kid, the 50's and 60's, when you, or I think about it, the Great Ones, Dutch, Len Duncan, Johnny Coy, Ernie McCoy, Johnny Mann, Joe Csiki, etc. Of course, my stock answer will always be that "Jiggs" was the best!!! But, if you had to press me for a non Family member, it would be ..............Dutch! Big John

.....'Sure. Dick Atkins' son, Ron, raced local sprint cars at Baylands Raceway in Fremont (CA) back in 1983/84 but only for a brief time. 'Not sure anyone in racing has heard from him since? When Dick lost his life at Ascot Park in Nov. 1966, his wife was pregnant with their daughter. And when Atkins was inducted into the BCRA Hall Of Fame in 1997, his daughter, Michelle showed up to receive the plaque at the ceremonies at Placerville (CA).

That’s another one I never saw.
From 1977-1986 I competed in Pacific International Trials and owned a house in Milpitas. I was lying in bed and could hear racecars. I swore they must have been coming from Fremont. Got on my Horse and went out there. Boy if it’s in your blood that’s all that Matters. I saw Baylands once and I was hooked on those high banks HAD TO GET ON THAT TRACK regardless of how “beg borrow steal”. Sold all my bikes and went for it .
I guess I missed Ron by 2 years. Had lots of fun to bad you can’t live 2 lives and run it all. ....lumpy

Believe it or not, I didn't get to see to many ARDC shows once my mom and dad split up in the late 40's. But the talent in those late 40's was as good or even better than what was coming up into the 50's and 60's - with some of them also having run in those 40's.

When Al Keller was killed at Phoenix in 1961, somebody stole the watch he was given for winning the pole that day.

Great to see Don Meacham mentioned in the BCRA Yearbook. Don was a class act when he came to Australia and raced.
In the Miran Caves Offy Sydney 1968....

Don back in Australia for a vintage midget show in 2004.
