I understand that chevy made two different styles of 283 block.

What are the differences, and how can I tell them apart?

    Thanks Gary

Only one I know of is the Box Nova blocks had the oil filter boss higher than normal. Is there another different one?

    Cheers!

When Chevrolet came out with the 327 in '62, even the 283 blocks from then on had enough clearance on the lower end for the counterweights and throws of a 327 crankshaft to clear everything, allowing hot rodders to make a 307 cubic inch small block out of a 283 block and a 327 crank.

  6. Long way back but did some of the early ones lack the provision for an oil filter (this may have been the early 265's)?

1955 265 cu in V8 engines ... no oil filter boss cast on the block ... 1956 and up have it ...

  8. I think the answers above about cover it. I prefer the 62 and later blocks because they were also used for 327s after being bored 125 thousanths to 4 inches...makes a killer 301 cu. in. winder-upper

  9. one more.....early 283's had a rope seal on the rear main, `59 and up used the two piece rubber seal

we used to bore most any block up to 1/8th in the 50,s. Anything over that you had to be careful. It was the time of the OHV influx. But then that was just my perspective at the time. I bored my 265 1/8 and then the 283,s came out, and we bored them 1/8, we called them 306's. Then some guys would stroke them and we called them 326,s. ??? Anyway this was before, 327,s. One guy I knew spent a small fortune to build a 326, for his Nova, and the next year they came out with the 327.

the later 283 blocks that were relieved in the main web area were to allow the bigger crank counterweight of the cast 283 crank, the earlier blocks that were not relieved will only accept the forged 283 crank that has a smaller counter weight.

i have seen guys trying to put 283s together that have a mix matched set and cant figure out why their 283 crank wont go into their 283 block

  13. I was told(which dudn't mean nuttin") it was the 61 and older blocks, that needed to be clearanced for the 327 crank.. kinda makes sense being that the 327 came out in 62.

??????? Both the Chevy II/Nova and the 327 debuted in 1962. I've even got a '62 HRM with an article about Chevolet selling a complete conversion kit over the parts counter to install a 360hp 327 in a Chevy II.

My casting number is 3794226 making is a 283 YEAR 1958-63. and now I can tell from the all of the info above that mine is a standard 283 unlike the later versions with the higher oil filter boss and relief for a larger crank...Thanks to everyone...Gary

I think the canister filters went up to '67. You can by an adapter kit that fits the older blocks. It worked for me.
