For posterity I am posting a couple of larger shots of Bob Rothenburg's timeless 1933 coupe as posted by ltownrodder earlier, from the Rod & Custom shoot. This coupe has always inspired me with one exception: by removing the spare tire recess and making a smooth trunk, they took a lot of Willys character out of the car....

Another shot of the 1936 Holden bodied panel van I posted earlier - the only one left in the world?

Here are couple of good shots of a 1933 Holden bodied sedan which shows the factory suicide doors. Note the much shorter cowl (no cowl vent) and different firewall treatment. This is the same on all the Holden bodies from 1933-1935 regardless of whether closed or open....

  7. Picture taken at Fontana late '65 racing against KS Pittman's '41 the Tall Texan was sporting a small block blown Chevy not Olds. The rear quarter shot of truck taken at Irwindale in early '66 with Finders driving but using the 392 Hemi owned by partner Ron Bizio . Look in several April '66 Drag News papers where the ads from Herbert cams list the "Finders and Dizio" setting records on 3-13-66 9.52 @ 155. Yes it says Dizio that's not my typo error.

I think this is Bob Ingrams coupe had a Vega engine in it and Vega rear with Vega disc brakes on front. I got pictures somewhere with this car and my 36 sedan at the Tulsa OK Steet Rod Nats in 76

1933 five window coupe - made from a sedan - note Holden body with suicide doors. I am not sure if Holdens ever made a five window coupe although two are rumored to be in existence. I wonder if they are real factory production? This one is not - it was made from four sedans!!! Note the suicide doors.

My thanks to my long time mate Bill Jansen for these photos from Willys Downunder....

  19. ***Does anyone have a better picture of how the upper valence that holds the sun visors attaches? It's been a while since I removed it and I am not sure what it attaches to. One picture shows it connected slightly below the headliner, but the 2nd picture shows just a flat edge to the wood header and I am not sure what it connects to.

    Great Thread Mark:

    1) Would it have been "Unusual" to see a 1933 Willys Gasser during the 60's retain the original steel front clip with operational hood?

    2) Approx what year during the 60's did we see the 33 Willys begin wearing fiberglass front clips?

    1. In the early 60's, say up through 63 or 64, many of the cars still ran the original sheet metal, grille, etc...
    Hirschfield.jpg jeffriesgas.jpg

But by 64, fiberglass was becoming more common, and most teams switched to glass for weight savings. Some of the lower gas class cars, like B/G or C/G and their supercharged equivalents, may have retained more of the original sheet metal, mainly because the weight per cubic rule didn't give them much advantage to switch. However, the heavy hitters in A/G and A/GS (AA/GS) were looking for every advantage they could get. So if glass was available, they used it.

    2. There are probably people on here that know the history on some of this stuff better than me, but Ohio George was probably one of the first to run a glass nose on a 33 Willys. Probably about 1963 is when he started running fiberglass. By 64, many glass components were available, and by late 64 or early 65, whole car bodys were available in glass. The Altizer, Finders & Kibler (Traveler) was reportedly all glass, and debuted in late 64. By 65, most of the top runners had many glass components on their cars, like the nose, hood, doors, deck lid, etc... In just a couple of years (1967), all glass cars were becoming more and more common, and by 1968, most of the newly constructed cars (meaning cars built for the 68 season) were being built in all glass. Here's some all glass examples.

Here's a couple of notable exceptions from 69 & 70. Both maintained the original grille.

This car ended up with a chopped top, and became the car below. I hope they changed that steering column. Yikes!!!

Here's some cool shots I found on Flickr. First is from the 64 Nats, and a couple from 65, but the rest are the 66 Nats.
