Anybody dealing with physical ailments delaying your project?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by terd ferguson, Jan 8, 2010.

  1. 59 3/4

Missing l5 S1 disc. permanent nerve damage.

Permanent left foot drop, get to wear a leg brace all the time.

    The artheritis that won't quit.

Glucosomine and Flaxseed Oil, big hits of each keep me at least able to go to work most days. Isn't much fun but a dirt nap isn't much fun either.

Two years ago I had severe pains in my stomach. Doctors couldn't figure it out and recommended a cat scan which found some pre cancerous activity on my right kidney. Went to the hospital for surgery and an overnight stay. I had an allergic reaction to the anesthesia and went out of my mind. Which included being restrained to the bed 24 hours a day. Talk about being shit scared. I wouldn't recommend that for my worst enemy. Finally after 3 weeks it subsided and I went home. Food tasted horrible and i couldn't eat well and lost 35 pounds. After about six months I returned to a relative normal state. The good news is my kidney is fine 2 years later. Slipped on the ice and tore the meniscus on my left knee which now really restricts my mobility. Because of the previous anesthesia problems, I'm afraid to have the knee surgery or any other surgery for that matter. With my lack of mobility I have no major car plans and as much as I hate to say it, I'm looking forward to some of the despised lawn chair rodding activity. Believe me guys the Golden Years aren't so Golden.

I have a worn out lower back ! I have 3 disc in a row that are paper thin if I am lucky . Yes very painful . I live on Fentanyl 100 every other day and sometimes it doesn't work that well . I have to watch how I move and can't pick up anything heavy at all . I also have 2 bad knees and my left arm is 1/2 numb most of the time . My left shoulder needs a rotator cup . I am on disability and have been for about 9 years now . It Fu**ing SUCKS the big one ! I work on my 55 Ford fordor when I can and when I am not in too much pain . I will stop working on my cars when I loose use of both my arms but until then , I will finish my car !
Now the bad part , with being on disability you get one shitty small check a month and that mostly goes to the meds I am on . NO Medicare doesn't cover it like many think it does . I have to buy separate insurance for the medications and Dr. visits . I was on Oxycontin 80 mg 3x a day till that about killed me and shut my internal system down .

So when I hear about a healthy person whining about being sore because of this and that I will trade with you any day at any time for the condition I am in ! I am great full that I can still work on the car sometimes because there are many on the HAMB that can't get out the door or breath on their own so , it can always be worst than what you have now !
So quit bitching and build your car ! Just because you are tired after working all day and not working on your project doesn't even come close to all of us that are just happy enough to get a few things done on our projects when we can !
I am not complaining because there are way more in worst shape than I am . You just do the best you can with what you have to work with . It will get done one day so then you can have fun driving it ! But till then just do your best to get it done because some will never see their projects ever completed !
***Just remember it can alway be worst !***

  9. Hydrocodone.

OK I don't take it on a regular basis only when I can't deal with it. I am good for about 2 hours in a normal day anymore. I'm not bitchin' its just life. I know my limitations and the missus keeps me motivated when I get lazy.

Ted remember this one thing pain means you are still alive. Its not the best but you are there. Get help with what you need to and do the rest on your own schedule. Never rate yourself by someone else's accomplishments, live life by your own rules and let everyone else pound gravel.

  11. That Hydrocodone does shit for me, I'm really surprised to read it helps you porknbeaner. Sometimes I take two and two beers, now that has some effect for a little while. When taken just one per directions I might get a head buzz for about 5 minutes about 25 minutes after taking it, but no relief from the pain at all.
As far as keeping motivated, my back pain is the last thing I think about while driving the ol hot rod !

Gettin' old isn't so bad when you consider the alternative!

Don't all mechanics have back trouble? Too much leaning over fenders.

I've got a vertebrae that's bad and allows my spine to move out of alignment. I had a knee replaced and the doctor didn't want to do both at once so I still need the other one done. I've got arthritis in my neck and thumbs. Lately a little vertigo has been added.

I still work six days a week but I don't get much done on projects. In the winter there is the snow to deal with. In the summer there's yard work and things to do on the house and buildings. I don't spend all night in the garage like I used to 30 years ago.

    Back all fucked up here.
4th and 5th lumbar are not so great. left and right shoulder issues too.
Mine were from a bad auto accident years ago. when you get T boned just behind the B pillar and almost rolled from someone coming thru an intersection at 60+..it really does a number. My Left shoulder tried to take out the door, and i was rag doll'd pretty good, even got my bell rung on the driverside window.
It almost flipped the Chevy pick up I was in.
Pretty much totaled the truck almost folded it in half.
I dont like quack doctors, and i dont like taking a ton of pain meds just to have them fuck me up later, so i pretty much just live with the pain, somedays are better than others, i try not to let it slow me down, but somedays it nails me out of the game

  17. I feel quite fortunate for myself after reading the horror stories the rest of the HAMBERs tell us.
For a lot of us it's age related, some it's war time injuries, others it's accidents or genetic inherited illness things.
Two of my closest friends suffer the consequences of Agent Orange, both highly decorated Vietnam vets. Their illness really saddens me.
Two of my pals suffer heart disease and one had a digit amputated in an industrial accident but we all keep on moving thanks to our families and our passion for our hot rods.
Yes, cancer has robbed the lives of several very dear hot rod pals.
It really sucks when one cant control one's destiny.
Last year at Christmas I ripped my right bicep apart when a huge crate containing a new snow blower dropped on me.
I was lucky in that I'm left handed so wearing a cast for 4 months on my right arm was just a minor inconvenience.
Exactly one week to that date this year I fall off a ladder and bumped myself up a bit.
I ignored the injuries 'till a month latter and I do something risky and foolish again and .....WOW! Now I really hurt!
Visit the surgeon and he tells me that I have 4 herniated discs and one broken disc plus a screwed nerve affecting my left leg.
    I'm still lucky though.
I rested at home in bed for one week, took some shitty pills, strapped on a brace and went back to work the first part January.
A month ago I'm wondering why my weight is plummeting so rapidly.
Lost about 25 pounds and still eating too much of everything.
    More tests, more doctor visits.
The doctors tell me last week that I have Celiac disease.
Again I'm one of the lucky ones. My symptoms are very minor compared to other people with the same disease.
Loosing weight is not a bad thing and a new special diet and one extra pill in the morning makes me feel like I dodged another bullet.
Yes...........this has seriously slowed progress on my hot rods needing attention out in the garage but I'll try harder now to watch my diet and health warning signs plus keep off tall ladders and steeply sloped roofs and other chancy maneuvers a person should NOT attempt.
My heart goes out to the rest of you in much more dire situations...keep up with your best efforts and keep the faith.
A close family and hot rods are my best therapy.

  18. I take it in conjunction with my other meds. Sometimes it doesn't do anything at all but when it works it takes the edge off. All I really need is to take the edge off, I have been doing this a long time.

I wa dealt a bad hand before I was old enough to walk. The Ace, King Queen, and Jack of Hearts and the 3 of Spades. I've been winning with this hand all my life, I'm just not smart enough to know its a loosing hand.

Back in 2002 i started having problems. went to see my "doctor" who tells me after a bunch of tests that I had a stroke. Ok --but I'm not getting better I'm getting worse. Just deal with it you'll get better he says. Has me on rat poison Cumiden for a year and still getting worse. Talking with my Chiropractor one day and she says check into Parkinsons Disease. Having Ins. I go to Barrow's in phoenix. run tests and sure enough Parkinsons it is. More than likley caused by Imron and Lacquer exposure since 1979 ( Before MSDs ) I always wore a resperator but that stuff gets in through your eyes and skin to.
Ins. finds out and drops me like a hot potato. Now with no ins, I'm going once a month to Phoinix on my dime and paying cash or my meds. the doctor wants to add another med. but its gonna cost me almost $1,200.00 a month!!!!!!!! Not being able to work at 100% like I used to I bearly make that some months. I was finally able to get on Ali Care. A trust that was set up for people with no ins. It pays for meds and the doctor. I thank God everyday.
I've been able to slow the progresion down for now but it will only get worse as time goes on. I'm 50 now and am still doing what I love. ( the damage is done )I do protect myself much better now though.
I still have goals plus a list of customers who know my disability that still want my services.
I have seen one thing and that is the more physical I am the better I feel every day. I have noticed more lately that I have to watch when I change directions I stumble more trying to get my feet to catch up to my body. I've been catching myself before I fall but I know those days are coming.
I can still paint, polish, wrench.fab and most all thigs requirerd otherthan sanding body work.

The bigest heartbreak I've had is I can no longer run my dragster safely and sold it.

    Just another day in paradise.

This was number 4 on my lower back.. had both my shoulders done with in last 2 years (due to being on the walker during the fusion), and a left elbow..On my right shoulder, it took 3 bone anchors to fix it.. I guess all those years racing BMX, and skateboarding, followed up by riding my ridgid HD's has taking its toll. I have since started going back to the skate park riding my bike and loving it.. Just not beating myself like I used too..lol But with my back, and now my shoulders from time to time it does take its toll on garage time..During the winter is the worst.. I get pissed off about it from time to time, but I usually just take a step out of the garage, grab a beer or 2, ok sometimes 6. And If it was'nt for my 54 (which has since been sold) my recovery from my spinal fusion would have been a real mind fuck, it kept the fire burning to get back out to the garage, that and a good group of friends and family to keep me positive... All I can say to you guys is don't let it get you down, and becareful with the pain med's, I know people who not in near as bad shape as me but are bed riddin, shut ins due to the fucking med's.. I'm not saying that from time to time I need them but they can fuck with your mind, body, family in ways that you can't even imagine.. So if it gets to you to the point you think you can't deal with it just call a good friend, and talk about it. I know its helped for me in the past.. Hell send me a P.M. I will talk to you about it..Stay positive... Ryan

Blew out a knee last week at a trade show. Having surgery on Wednesday. That will slow progress on the '48 a little bit.

I just found this thread and it scares me. I have been off work for two years now because of back problems. I have had problems with cancer(bladder),kidney stones, carpal tunnel, that is now good, but the one that got me the worst is my back. I have spinal stenosis, two herniated discs and degenerative disc disease which has caused the discs to collapse and pinch the nerves in between. And an awful lot of arthritis.
I can't be on my feet for long or sit in most chairs due to the angle they put my back in, i can't bend my back at all to work or do anything . I spend most of my time in a recliner with a heat pad or on the computer also with the heat, the computer is my main sourse of entertainment and thank goodness the HAMB can be so entertaining!
I have had to sell a couple of projects that i never wanted to part with, because i realized that i probably will never be able to work on them again. I still have my avatar, but it is not the most practical for me. I often think of trying to trade it for something newer that doesn't have running boards and is easier to get in and out of.
On March 17 i go to see another back surgeon for another opinion. The last one said i had too much damage and he could not help me. I see a pain management specialist about every six weeks and he freezes my discs, sometimes it helps and sometimes not. On May 24, he is going to "burn off" the effected nerves that are causing the most problems, one being the sciatic pain in my right leg that is like a tooth ache. I was happy to hear someone earlier said it helped him.
I am on Relievia, a opiate painkiller. I was on a 300 mi dose, and after having an overdose that i thought i was going to die from, i ended up at the Hosp. where the dosage was dropped to 200 mi. I still need a 500 mi Tylenol as well to take the edge off every four hours. And of course, you can'nt drink and and take these pills. After reading all these posts i am wondering if i ever get my problem solved, am i going to have to go through some sort of re-hab to get off these drugs? I am always in a "fog" and don't think too clear.
I know there are a lot of people worse off than me, but i have always worked and spent far too much spare time building cars, and now i can't do anything and i sometimes have a hard time dealing with it. Very frustrating.
I wish every one of you guys could get back to being healthy, and we could all get back out to the shop, good luck, Brian

I have degenerative disc disease and 2 herniated discs L4&L5. The only thing that works for me is traction and chiropractic adjustments. I still work full time as an electrician/millwright.

Mine are L3 and L4. My insurance company cut me off my physio as soon as they read my MRI and realized that i wasn't going back to work. They only paid for it because they thought it would get me back to work sooner. The physio helped for a day or so and i was going twice a week. I couldn't afford the fifty dollars a visit on my disability pension, so i had to stop.

Yhea guys back problems can slow you down for sure.. I've had to sell all my projects 4 different times. been dealing with this shit since I was 22, 41 now, all started with a herniation of L4, and a quack ass doctor that talked me into a surgery that screwed me up bad... The last was the fusion, and it really turned me around, but now they want to do a spinal stimulator (anybody had any luck, or no luck with one? PM me with your thoughts on one please if you have one).. But hey guys I say do what you can to make it thru the day.. It was a real bitch to watch a nieghbor (asshole nieghbor at that) help teach my kid to ride a bike.. Being an old BMX B-pro I really took that hard, but hey the guy was just trying to help, and I realize that now, but its crazy how pain can effect you not only physically, but mentally.... Hang in there guys go out and even if you just windex the windows or polish a piece of chrome.. It will really help you mentally with your pain and your projects...

Well I might as well jump in, I have had two disc replaced and fused in my neck. One when I was 40 the other when I was 42. While trying to recover from the second surgery my lower back began to hurt, that was 4 years ago and I have had 6 shots in my spine (ass crack- WOW) and still hurt most days. I almost gave up on cars after the second surgery but have too many project going so I just work alot slower now, some progress is better than no progress. Just trying to stay away from going under the knife again. Sergury helps but you are never the same.

My son sent me this link, I thought it was truly inspiring and appropriate to interject here. Unfortunately, the link is a little confusing (I'm an older guy, easily confused by the interweb): There is an ad in the beginning for TC bank, it runs for 20 seconds or so, then it goes to a still screen. Click on the play arrow at the left bottom of the video, if you get a screen countdown, you are good to go.
