A friend here on the HAMB sent me this old steering wheel for an O/T project, sure has some interesting detail work, thought I would share! I can tell parts of it are wood but looks like some kind of bakelite? injected to it in parts. Anyone have a clue as to origin? Boat maybe? Thanks
looks similiar to a couple of boat steering wheels i have, mine are newer and made of metal, but design wise thats what id say it is, really cool piece.
huh its pretty cool ,seems a bit fancy in detail for a steering wheel , im thinking a machine wheel from maybe a textile machine spin the wheel to get the roll started printing press ? its a toughy
Being so dark it's hard to get a good pic of it. After fondling it for awhile I'm not so sure it wood but maybe an injection molding of some sort, just don't know. FAB32, track racer, wouldn't that be nice!
That freakin' thing is beautiful. Is the tapered/keyed shaft hole the same size as 30-31 Model A Ford and later Ford V8s? I'll say it's a boat wheel for a damn flashy boat! Some maritime guy will have to get specific.
Now thats nice.............lots of detail, and it looks to be in great condition yep looks like it would fit a Model A column...........i could try it out for ya........! . .
R Pope, can you post a pic out of the book, or e-mail it to me? darkk, can't sell it was a gift from a new HAMBER but not new to a long lifetime of toys! No tapper to shaft hole.................... Here's better lit pic's ...................
That thing is SPECTACULAR! WAY cool! Sure looks like wood, even has some small checks like wood, but then I don't see any joints, or change of direction in the grain. Almost looks like the grain goes around the outside of the wheel, so maybe a really good job of faux-wood-grain-molding...Hard to tell from the pics, but I do know that thing is GOLD!! EW
I have had a few steering wheels like that. They were used on Studebakers, Chryslers, Nash, Marmon, and a few other independent or assembled car companies. 1923-27 era. Assembled car companies were companies that had minimal manufacturing capability. They bought what they didn't make. It is a resin of some kind. Last one I sold at Hershey for $150, extra nice, no scratches. uniform color.
It may be made of wood. You could get that detail of texture in there by steaming it and placing it in a press.
ive messed with a lot of boats and with one key slot in the hub I would say a boat. would look cool in a car though.
