  8. Knew them in the 60's as flappers or toilet seats. Were good for a laugh when centrifigal force flaired them away from the tire.

Theres the first right answer. Bucks weren't easy to come by and real WWs were expensive. Actually any tire (with tread on it) was expensive. So you did what you could with what you had. All you desired in the hot rod world wasn't a mouse click away back then.

Porta walls..the real funny thing about them was if you were driving down the Hiway, and a car passed you with them on, they would be away from the tire about an inch and a half, due to the air flow on them. Looked goofy, but I have a full N.O.S. set of them with my other auto memorabilla.

Isn't the JJ/HAMB about tradition? Like 'em or not, blackp-15coupe and firingorder nailed it. Excellent garage art / conversation pieces. Those orphan hubcaps like 'em too.

"Porta-wall's"... Which I always thought was short for "portable whitewalls"... When your tires were shot, you just took them off and put them on your new tires (usually $10 recaps) Back then most of the high school guys had to finance their own rides... Good "porta-wall's" were hard to tell from the genuine thing without close inspection... Some just ran them on the rear because they were mostly covered up by the skirts anyway...

  21. In the early 70's, we Lowriders called them Mickeys. They were not hugely popular then, but that's what we called them

Seems I'm not alone, I have never liked whitewalls, thin or wide, white letters even less.

Obviously you didn't live in the time when WWs meant you had a few dollars in your wallet. And you didn't have to do what my aunt would do when BBQing hamburgers. When they were done she'd shout out to my uncle (loud enough for the neighbors to hear) "Steaks are ready!". Or try getting real WWs when you're make 39 cents an hour.

Very true. I remember a friend in highschool trying to sort out what the best 2 of a set of 4 very used Cragar SSs were (all same size) so he could put the best two on the curb side as that's what people would see when he was cruisin. I told him it didn't matter on the pile o shit he was drivin'! lol
