Customs What did you do for Thanksgiving, I chopped my Hudson!

Not much to update lately. I finished all the welding, put the roof in DP 90 primer before I started the bodywork. I got tired of sanding bondo, so I cut down the vent windows. I had to remount the division bar and then start cutting the vent down. They only had to be cut down about 3/4 then the top had to be reshaped.


After welding, grinding, sanding, filing, more welding, more sanding I think they are ready to go to the chromer.

 

Looks real good!

One word of caution. Be sure to test fit your window frames with the stainless window trim on the car, and the new vent window rubber installed before you have them plated.

I don't know yet if the new rubber that is available through K-Gap is a slightly larger size or what, but my freshly chromed vent windows do not fit once I put the stainless on the window opening and installed the new rubber. (they're too big).

 

Thanks for the heads up. I still need to order the rubbers. Now I will wait before taking the vents to the chromers and get the rubbers first.

Another little update. The roof is now in the first coats of filler primer, I have been working on the stainless. Before I primed the roof I also welded up the holes for the wipers. In the five years I have been driving the car I always used rain-x. Mostly because the wipers did not work. When I got the car the cable driven wipers were missing parts, so when I redid the firewall I removed the cable and pulley system. Now it was time to remove the wiper transmissions.


I made a patch and tig welded it in place

 

Before I started the chop I got a full set of 4dr stainless trim from Owens Salvage. I wanted to have extra pieces and curves. This is the first set I cut down so I was a little nervous. I did some checking on here and found some really good posts about doing this. I did not take any pictures cutting them down(sorry). Here are some I have already finished. I still need to do all the final sanding, I am going to wet sand them up to 2000 grit then polish.

 

Beautiful job on that stainless trim, fits like factory. Welding and polishing stainless trim is definitely on my list of things I want to practice this summer. Top has a good flow too, very nice work.

NO flake on the top. For now it will be black again. i still have a ton of bodywork to do to the rest of the car. When it is painted it will be all one color. I am shooting for the look of something built in late '50's, a straight color no metallic

Here is the latest. The roof is painted some of the stainless is polished and back on. The big issue I am running into right now is getting gaskets for the windshield and back glass. I have been trying since mid January to get them from the only place I know of for Hudson rubbers. Now they don't even return calls to let me know when they will be in stock. I am trying to have it back together for the Roundup, but......

This was Fri nite after finishing the final blocking before paint on Saturday.

I feel your pain concerning the unspecified Hudson vendor. They are definitely hit-and-miss.

Thanks guys. I just came in from making the window patterns. I picked up my vent window frames from the chromer today. Unwrapping new chrome is like unwrapping Christmas gifts. They look awesome.

Sonny, how did the pipe work out? The pictures of the bike look killer.

 

I called a friend that builds and owns Hudsons, and the company for the window rubber you are refering to, get there rubber from Metro. So you might check with them. He is still waiting on some door seals that he ordered in February, last year. Best of luck.

Metro does not make windshield and back glass rubber for these. I ordered all my vent window rubbers from them. I have a feeling this might keep me from making the Roundup, and it pisses me off
